‘The Cold War is over': Pakistan PM mulling arms deals with Moscow ahead of SCO summit

Pakistan will buy 5 more MI-35M .... and keeping in mind the current situation this is the best we can get ...

hmm interesting. isnt there a comparable system offered by Turkey that we could look at?

Need other trades with Russia beside military.

Some Russian Sub-systems and complete systems maybe worthwhile for Pakistan to consider. Beyond the Pantsir and Mi-35; which should be studied against the more favorable more modern Turkish options; Here are 12 items that should be looked into.

1. A slightly older ABM system of older S-300VM missile may be worthwhile purchase. It could be purchased for a bargain price, but still features radars, communications, and training to engage enemy ballistic missiles. The large rocket motors and casings and TEL Launcher could be applied to "other" projects as well ...

2. Russian coastal surveillance Radars (Over the horizon) could be purchased as an EEZ management system, and help direct drones to potential hostile military or commercial activities in our EEZ.

3. Russian ESM/ELINT equipment could help in managing the EM spectrum better in times of heightened tensions. Russian experience gained from Syria, where they operated in the same space as most mid-east nations and NATO means they soaked up a lot of transmissions. There is a lot they could package and offer to a customer willing to pay.
(in this vein, Russian technical schools could also teach Pakistan's brightest technical students in an exchange program, and work on joint ventures in commercial e-commerce)

4. Russian officer exchange programs could help better understand Indian training and tactics at all levels of C4ISR, as well as give our officers a different way of thinking. Russians have trained with less modern equipment then the west, and training to confront a more modern force, therefore training with such constrains would also be useful.

5. Russian Mi-26T could help in the heavy lift in the mountains and in the cold; especially if the need to support commercial tourist ventures makes its a profitable acquisition. The Russians are experts at cold weather capability.

6. Russian Small Arms especially CQB Carbines for Special forces (army and police) could be bought to maximize efficacy of quick reaction forces.

7. More modern RPG rounds to maximize penetration against all but full on tanks requiring ATGMs which should also be studied

8. Russian Night vision equipment if its wins out in a competition among other suppliers. Russian cold weather equipment from the most simple rugged car engines to advanced optronics could help save lives when stuck in extreme cold weather.

9. Russian command and control equipment for Submarines; VHF shore based and sub based masts, etc. Russia's decades of experience when it comes to submarines and the training to operate diesel-electric submarines when hunted by enemy SSNs is also an important intangible that should be looked into.

10. Kashtan-M missile and gun based defense system to upgrade the Azmat Class FACs

11. Komor submarine detection system;

12. Russian ERA Armor or Composite Armor upgrade packages for Pakistani Tanks. This one is hardest of all to get considering close Russian-Indian ties, but should be looked into none the less.

Russia has experience, tactics, and many rugged systems that are world class; and that too at reasonable prices.

Lmao. I was thinking like cars (for northern region) and textiles .
They don't have good cars textiles not sure could be energy, arms manufacturing subsystems technical cooperation good thing Russia has its Arms cheap reliable and rugged.

Sputnik: Your country has been long importing US-made weapons, even became of the largest arms buyer, but now Russian arms seem to be getting a lot of attention in the region. Is Islamabad planning to purchase Russian weapons as well? Are you considering the purchase of the S-400 air defense systems?

Imran Khan: As I’ve said, once the Cold War was over. Previously Pakistan was tied to the US, and, as we all know, India was tied to the Soviet Union. And no longer is that situation there. First, we hope that our tension with India decreases, so we do not have to buy arms because we want to spend money on human development. But, yes, we are looking for arms from Russia, and I know our military is already in touch with the Russian military.

This is what happens when we have a Security State than a Welfare State. Instead of discussion on how to revive economy, focus is on buying weapons.
From Russia's perspective, we are not friends but a potential client.... this to me is not an achievement from IK's and developing foreign relation point of view.

A sensible purchase currently would be pantsir S-1/2
