The Clash Within Civilisations: The Sunni-Shiite Divide

I propose a project:

Global Fiqh Council (GFC)

Headquarter must be in a high gdp Muslim country, I recommend either Turkey or Malaysia. It should be a research institution in an Islamic university. Every country and ethnic group of Muslims with at least 5 million population will get to send one Ulama from their community. So there will be approximately 320 Ulama representatives from around the world. Around 280 from Sunni communities and 40 from Shia communities.

The project should be funded by OIC.

It should have living quarters for all Ulama, library, class, conference centers etc. Qualified Ulama's will teach classes at the university, others will do teaching assistant job and research.

Their job will be to come up with a standardized one version of Sunni Islam, one version of Shia Islam and then make sure that these standardized versions do not have any conflict between them. There can be standardized sub-versions for individual Madhabs.

Once these standardized versions are finalized, then all previous versions will be considered null and void and made illegal if possible. New text books (in every language that has significant Muslim population), research books, position papers will be published by GFC.

Then it will become mandatory for all Mosques, Imams, Mullahs, Madrasa, Islamic teaching institutions etc. to follow these teaching materials in every OIC member countries. OIC will also have to make treaties or agreements with countries with significant minority Muslims such as India, Russia, EU, USA etc. to make these materials available to their institutions, which will go a long way towards preventing deviant ideas among their Muslim population.

My motivation for this proposal is the following:

- Islam and Muslims have been a world power since its beginning
- Mongol invasion was a major body blow and many say Islamic civilization never recovered from it
- West which luckily got spared from Mongol invasion due to death of Ogedei Khan right before the invasion, later got more powerful and superseded all civilizations in rest of the world
- decline of Islamic civilization and empires specially became acute in last 3 hundred years, with loss of Mughal Hindustan, which went under British and finally divided in partition, Ottoman fragmented in WW I and Iran also lost land such as Azerbaijan to Russia
- after the fall of Mughal, Deoband started in India, and after fall of Ottoman Salafi became powerful in Arabian peninsula and others started spreading ideas of political Islam such as Hassan Al Banna, Syed Qutb, Jamal Al din Afghani, Taqiuddin Nabhani, Abul Ala Moududi, OBL, Zwahiri, Awlaqi etc. Since 1979 Shia Islam had their own supremacist ideology developed in Qom.
- the thing to note about all of the above ideas/ideology is that these are product of fragmented societies without backing of any state power and hence are fundamentally devoid of legitimacy and are bound to be full of deviations
- Salafi is an exception as it is tied to a state, but its origin is from a rebellious area who never had to administer a large empire with this ideology. Its management of Saudi Arabia and allowing funds to spread to other parts of the world is questionable
- the recent Shia ideology developed in Qom since 1979 has so far badly mismanaged Iran and shia affairs by spreading these ideas among other Shia population. One effect of this has been constant conflict with Sunni Muslims in many parts of the world
- so due to lack of interest or understanding of how important it is to manage religious and ideological matters and manage them centrally in one place, amateurs have taken over in this area with their ad hoc efforts in many parts of the world with catastrophic results
- the solution I believe is pulling together a team from all corners of the Muslim world and then properly manage all religious matters centrally in one place and thus take it out from the hands of amateurs

If we can get this project going, I think we will be able to address some critical problems Muslims and Islam are facing, such as Shia-Sunni divide and conflict, terrorism and violence by rogue Islamic groups, groups like Taliban banning education for Girls without any basis in Islam and many others.

The GFC can be a seed for solution to this problem of fragmentation and conflict and a vehicle to promote unity among 1.6 billion Muslims.

30-40yrs from now there won't even be religion anymore so who cares. Globalisation and social interaction via the internet is going to change the global perceptions in time. The world was always designed by those who held the greatest technology from the recurve bow to the nuclear weapon and if the Western world gave up on Christianity and adopted secularism (East as well) then soon so will the rest of the world. Idea always has been, if you want to stay ahead, then old customs, values and ethics has to change to adopt new processes and systems and its an ever changing process.

looks like someone is absolutely wrong!

Israel, America, and Russia!!!

Here i fixed it for you. Wahabi Salafis are not external players,

Most shias don't in Iran, I can't tell you what shias do in other countries !!!! but In iran we are way too Busy loving OUR IMAM ALI SO SO much to even think about Yazid. It's really a waste of time. But the Sunni care soo much about this issue. I mean most Sunni do stuff that irk Shias , but do you see Shias complaining or killing them?

Who is Yazid actually?? we have problems with people who curse Abu Bakr(R), Umar (R) and mother of believers Aysha (R). I am yet to see any shia using Radi Allahu 'anhu / Radi Allahu 'anha after their name........................

On topic- To both Arab prince and Ayatullah

O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.

:woot: well thought out!!!

A a group of few people are willing to sell themselves for filling their personal bank account jeopardizing the future of people and country then this will happen. The same is happening in Pakistan, group of few people are selling themselves to fight foreign agendas. The war of Shia Sunni happened in Karbala over the struggle of throne. There is no need to settle scores over it in Damascus or Karachi. Evil mullahs use distorted history as a match to ignite violence - exactly what the shaitan loves to do. Sow disaccord between people and cause bloodshed.

It is indeed amazing that at an age when Man aims for stratospheric jumps, moon missions, these subcontinental Muslims still peddle this Global Ummah-Chummah Fiqh-Munafiqh nonsense around. A council that is going to teach stone-age principles completely orthogonal to the principles of science will only make the peddlers of this nonsense go regressive. Then people wonder about how does Bangladesh and PakiLand keep on producing such jihadists willing to blow up one another at the drop of a hat self-deluding themselves and others about their "progressive" culture.

:woot: well thought out!!! If only people can put their "political" differences aside and work together. Terrorism and violence are the worst of the worst problems right now! and most westerns don't realize muslims are the victims. specially right now in Pakistan, Lebanon, Syria,Iran. I have a proposal as well. All Middle Eastern and Muslim countries should close out their Israeli and Amercan embassies. THIS will slove alot of problem, trust me. The espionage that goes on in these CIA and Mossad bases cause destablization of many countries and so many TERRORIST acts. Most people don't realize America and Israel are the number one export of terrorist activites. You just need a little bit of studying to understand what they do. It's really bad. They really have no shame, for example the mosques bombings in Iran, the bombers admitted to have been funded and trained by the CIA, but then it came out that they it was actually Mossad. So it goes to show CIA and Mossad are one entity really, work hand in hand.

Thanks for the kind words.

USA and Israel try to protect their interest, so does every other country. A lot of other countries are engaged in clandestine activity, violence and insurgency. It is the nature of state craft.

US led West has a GDP of around $37 trillion, which is more than 50% of world economy, so it is hard to ignore the West, let alone close their embassies. Like many other Muslim countries Bangladesh economy is also highly dependent on the West and Western allied Arab countries. Bangladesh however do not have diplomatic relations with Israel and do not plan to have any in the future. So no Israeli embassy in Bangladesh, but there is a big American embassy.

The biggest threat to US led West, of which Israel is a small but important part, is not Iran, or Russia but its China. But they have not been able to figure it out yet. If you look at China, how they are growing and becoming more powerful every year, they are one of the biggest trading partner of the US and West. So even if they are the biggest existential threat, they are being able to show a friendly face and get away with undermining the interest of the West. I call that smart.

In brief it is better not to pick a fight with someone you cannot win. But I don't blame Iran's people for this, I think Iranian regime has managed the country and its foreign policy very poorly since 1979.

Muslim Unity ? Sure we are seeing that in context of Libya, Egypt, Saudi, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Bahrain, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc. :) Mate please, come to real world.

Havent you seen the posts of the people above -- those from places like UP which have a significant Sunni and Shiite population living nearby ? I can say they are true having been in Gujarat which again has a significant Shia population. I'll just end by saying in places like Guj, the Sunnis are terribly envious of the Shias who live in prosperity and spare no attempt in ridiculing them using the choicest words..

LMAO, i have been seeing this unity since the birth of this theocracy between Ali's followers and Abu Bakr's followers. What fellow Muslims did in Andalusia. In the modern times, between Jordan and the Palestinians in 1970. We saw the Muslim unity in 1971 in Shonar Bangla. Also in Iran-Iraq in 1988. Also in Iraq-Kuwait in 1990. In fact, i like this concept of Muslim Unity, except that i do not understand what "Unity" means in this context.

Can you explain that part a bit ?

Can you explain that part a bit ?
Essentially, modern day southern Spain (Gibraltar included) or Andalusia were ravaged by hordes and hordes of Muslim rulers even though the rule was established by the Umayyads and later on the Moors. You know how were they defeated and overthrown from Andalusia ? When the king of Spain and Queen Isabella of Portugal married, they formed one powerful force to wipe out the Moors once and for all from Andalusia. And you know another interesting fact ? It was precisely a few months after that Columbus set out on his path to discover the "New World" while the Muslims who keep crowing here about Unity were fighting amongst themselves for lust of power. That is why, they who do not know their own history, when make such statements about Unity, makes one chuckle at that thought.

This Sunni-Shia divide has always been seen as a problem. It was the very same reason for the Islamic empire to collapse. :hitwall:

The good thing that happned is the Soviet Union collapse, leaving Azerbaijan,Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikstan independent. Now the most difficult thing is Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Since they are relatively newer states, their geographical location is too difficult to actually form a block.
