The ‘China Model’ is being tested by Covid, Russia and the economy. And it’s coming up short.

A year ago, while many countries were still reeling from Covid-19, China seemed to be one of the few places prospering through the pandemic. It was also the only major economy that reported growth in 2020. Global investors were bullish on Chinese stocks even as Beijing’s regulatory crackdown on its private sector became more like a political campaign.

That led some people in China to argue that its one-party authoritarian rule offered a compelling alternative to traditional liberal democracy. The United States was declining politically and economically, they said, and the world was “gravitating toward China.” Many Chinese cheered the narrative online.

A year later, the tone within China is more one of anxiety, anger and despair. In the past month, hundreds of millions of people there have struggled under lockdowns as coronavirus outbreaks spread across the country. Foreign investors are dumping Chinese stocks over geopolitical, regulatory and pandemic uncertainties. And the government’s support of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia as he wages war in Ukraine has risked the world’s criticism, and potentially sanctions.

It’s all leading to increasingly anxious questions about the country’s path — and even about whether too much power has been concentrated in the hands of the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, who is seeking a third five-year term at the Communist Party congress late in the year.

On social media, a growing number of citizens are accusing the Communist Party of breaching its social contract with the people. They had tolerated, and sometimes praised, one-party rule in exchange for economic growth and social stability. But its stringent lockdown measures, which are straining entire cities, and its regulatory crackdowns are costing many of them jobs and income and leaving their futures looking much more uncertain and gloomier than a few years ago.

I am still waiting for the collapse bro. China is doing a pretty good job controlling the outbreaks within 3 weeks with the industries still running matey. I am in Shanghai now, first few days was a bit chaotic since we didn't have any lcokdwon for almost 2 years, then now it's very well controlled.

The Chinese recently reached a deal to have eight companies making Pfizer’s Paxlovid under license, so if they find infected people they will have another option to start treatment ASAP in hoes of stoping the spread.

This is a really weird article because people here have been going through the same issues with lockdowns, inflation, market slowdown etc. in the US but no grand statements are being made about American governance.

China government is actually open to anything that works except mrna vaccine. Btw Pfizer mrna was not developed by Pfizer alone, its Fosun Pfizer and biontech, Fosun owns the greater China rights while Pfizer who paid the majority of the cost owns the rest of the world rights.

Until China has a mRna vaccine ready of its own (a domestic version of Pfizer or something it develops itself).

Ignore the usual China bashing bullshit, I do think it's time for China to change strategy.

The lockdowns are creating a lot of resentment, especially when they catch the locals off guard. It threatens job security, food security and access to medical care if imposed for extended amount of time. The newer variants of COVID also spreads more easily, making lockdowns less effective at containment. Most importantly, the virus is no longer as deadly as the original variant.

I think China should vaccinate the entire population age 12 to 80 in the coming 3 months, while requiring mandatory face masks in all public indoor and outdoor spaces. Restrict large gatherings and impose social distancing in restaurants, train stations, schools and airports. The virus will spread, but slowed by these measures and the population will be protected by vaccination.

China does have mrna vaccines by cansino, its not rocket science. And again its not the Pfizer vaccine but biontech vaccine, Fosun is owner of the rights in China.

Death from covid is extremely low in China because of the controlled spread, our health systems are not overwhelmed.

Then why the lockdowns? If the vaccines are effective and more effective COVID treatments are available, why is the zero-COVID policy still in place?

The vaccines can't prevent the spread just like the Pfizer vaccines can't. For deaths and severe illness, it's worst than Pfizer but still low, but alot of elderly people were not vaccinated, that's the remaining 15 to 20%. China has 1.4 billion people, you do the math and see. Until today, our death rates are low because we control the spread so hospitals and the medical system don't get overwhelmed. Only China can contain teh virus no country can mate. Its a cultural and political system. People follow rules during the crisis, you don't follow, you will be locked up. It's as simple as that, and please also don't read into the food shortage issue, I just receive 20kilos of rice, milk and noodles and I still can order delivery from 10 to 20 nearby restaurants, its slower by 1 hour but I still. Got my burger in 1 hour.

Western MSM trigger-happy response, like low-nutrition fast food.

China actually vaccinated 85% of the adults but the 70 and above have very very low vaccinations and they are in the millions mate. I am not concerned about the effectiveness of Chinese vaccines against severe and death. It might be worst than Pfizer but its still very low. Both vaccines are uselss against the spread btw.
