Why the Goal was Disallowed in the USA vs. Slovenia Match

June 18, 2010 12:58 PM EDT

A furious comeback for the United States against Slovenia in the 2010 FIFA World Cup that should have ended in a win has unfortunately ended in a tie as the result of a mystifying call in the 84th minute.

With the United States and Slovenia tied at 2 following two second half goals by the Americans, Landon Donovan struck a beautiful free kick from the right side that went curling into the box where Maurice Edu put it in the back of the net for the apparent go-ahead goal. However, the referee blew his whistle and indicated that the goal would not be allowed. According to the players, even after the match he refused to explain the call.

Here is what I believe happened: As Donovan was running up to the ball, Michael Bradley of the U.S. broke for the goal just a split second early, placing him just barely offsides. The assistant referee, who is responsible for making offsides calls, saw Bradley and, in anticipation of Bradley touching the ball, raised his flag to indicate offsides. However, Bradley did not touch the ball (in part because he was being hugged from behind by a Slovenian defender), and Edu put the ball in the net from a legal position. I believe that the assistant referee instantly knew he missed the call, but his flag was up, and there was nothing he could do about it at that point. Had Bradley touched the ball he would have been correct, but since he didn't this goes down as a major blown call that will likely affect the outcome of this group in the World Cup

Man this happens. Go and check how England won 1966 world cup!! Thats why we all love Football. Its an unpredictable game

WC will go to south America.
To Brazil

England really missed Theo Wolcott. He even scored a hat rick for England in their journey towards world cup. And when he was just 17 he was in the 2006 world cup squad. And he is not in the world cup 2010. England needed something like this for their last match

Do not know what they are doing right now :undecided: :undecided:

Pakistan's World Cup stitch-up

Sialkot, Pakistan (CNN) -- Through choking traffic and crude streets, pastoral scenes and fields of wheat, there is a journey to be made in the heart of the Punjab that will take you to the very soul of the beautiful game.

For a country some have come to see as the world's leading exporter of terror, it is a glimpse into all that is possible when you consider that for decades now Pakistan has also been a leading exporter of hand-stitched soccer balls.

BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward suggests Koman Coulibaly for a Knighthood

Roy Turse, Friday, 18 June 2010

The board of BP, the beleaguered ex-British petroleum company has suggested World Cup referee Koman Coulibaly as a potential Knighthood recipient. It followed Tony Hayward's grilling by the US House Energy and Commerce Committee, and came shortly after the USA's 2-2 draw against Slovenia in the World Cup.

Obviously, as a multinational company BP have no influence on UK honours, but they feel it is an issue which they are willing to put some effort behind.

Koman Coulibaly is the referee that controversially ruled against Maurice Edu's late goal that would have given the USA a win in their World Cup group game against Slovenia.

BP maintains that they have always recognised Mr Coulibaly's contribution to international football and fair play. They claim he was already ear-marked for the honour, and his completely uncontroversial management of the USA/Slovenia match only added to his kudos as an impartial judge in the beautiful game that really isn't baseball, and it's a shame it isn't cricket.
