Germany humiliate Argentina to advance

CAPE TOWN: Germany stormed into the World Cup semifinals on Saturday with a 4-0 demolition of Diego Maradona’s outclassed Argentina as Miroslav Klose edged towards becoming the tournament’s greatest ever goal-scorer. Germany now face either Spain or Paraguay, who meet later on Saturday, in Durban next Wednesday with a place in the final at Johannesburg’s Soccer City on July 11 at stake. It was the third time at these finals that rampant Germany had scored four goals in a match while Argentina superstar Lionel Messi once again failed to reach the heights expected of him. A third-minute goal by Thomas Mueller gave Germany a 1-0 lead, before the three-time champions turned the screw after the interval. Klose, winning his 100th cap, netted in the 68th minute, centre-back Arne Friedrich scored his first for his country six minutes later before Klose completed the rout with an 89th-minute volley which gave him a 14th World Cup goal, just one behind Ronaldo’s record of 15.

German coach Joachim Loew got the better tactically of a bewildered Maradona as the men in black defended doggedly and attacked in numbers. “We really turned in an incredible showing. Scoring four goals against Argentina you just have to say that that was class. And we closed down Messi very well - without resorting to fouls, so that was great,” said Loew. “We really stepped on the gas in the second half and played a liberated style of attacking football.” Loew added: “This result and the amount of goals we scored was almost unimaginable before the game.”

Argentine coach Diego Maradona said his team was devastated, but admitted Germany controlled the game. “We studied Germany well and defined exactly who was playing where but from the first cross they got a goal and suddenly it was a different match,” said Maradona. “We made it easy for them. They had more ideas and better control of the ball. They took advantage of the opportunities they had. But this does not taking away from my belief that the result does not correspond with what happened on the pitch.” He was keen to pay tribute to his players, and added that he would consider his own future in the days ahead. “I’m still proud to be leading these players and I’d like to publically thank them, as well as the technical staff,” he said.

World footballer of the year Messi was tightly marked by Mueller and Bastian Schweinsteiger as Argentina’s star-studded side failed to shine. The only blot on Germany’s copybook was Mueller’s first-half yellow card for handball which sees him suspended for the semi-final. Argentina striker Carlos Tevez said defeat was a huge disappointment. “It’s a huge pain. We knew it would be complicated and that they wouldn’t let us attack,” said Tevez. “We didn’t score. There’s nothing we can say about their victory.” Germany took the lead after just three minutes when Mueller headed home a Schweinsteiger free-kick for his fourth goal of the tournament, the ball deflecting in off goalkeeper Sergio Romero’s leg. Argentina right-back Nicolas Otamendi earned the first yellow card on 11 minutes for a foul on Friedrich while the South Americans’ first sight of goal came when Messi slid a pass through to Tevez, but goalkeeper Manuel Neuer raced from his line to deal with the threat.

Argentina had an encouraging start to the second-half as Real Madrid new boy Angel Di Maria fired a long-range shot which had Neuer at full-stretch on 48 minutes and Per Mertesacker blocked a shot from Tevez on 54 minutes. But Germany extended their lead when Podolski found space on the left flank and passed back inside for Klose to score on 68 minutes. Schweinsteiger helped make sure of Germany’s place in the last four when he darted through the Argentinian defence to give Friedrich a simple tap in on 74 minutes to claim his first international goal on his 77th appearance. Argentina’s defence crumbled as Klose completed the demolition with his 52nd goal for Germany as he volleyed home a cross from Mesut Ozil just before the final whistle. afp

World Cup replica made of cocaine found in Colombia
A replica World Cup trophy seized by anti-drugs police in Colombia is made out of cocaine, lab tests have confirmed.

The 36cm (14in) statue was found in a delivery crate at Bogota airport.

The crate was in an airmail warehouse waiting to be sent to an address in Spain, airport anti-drug chief Jose Piedrahita said.

In another development, a submarine built by drug-traffickers was found in Ecuador before its maiden voyage.

The World Cup replica was made up of 11kg (24 lb) of the drug, mixed with acetone or gasoline to make it mouldable.

The gold-painted statue was found on a routine sweep of the airport on Friday, authorities said.

The Ecuadorian submarine, capable of carrying tonnes of cocaine, was discovered in a river near the border with Colombia, the US Drug Enforcement Agency said.

The camouflaged 31m- (100 ft-) long vessel has a conning tower, periscope and air-conditioning system.

One man was arrested.

Brazil Find Scapegoat
Brazil found a scapegoat for their World Cup loss on Friday in the shape of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
Internet sites noted that Jagger had backed the five-times champions to beat the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, but the Dutch went through 2-1.
The rock star had previously lent his support to the United States and England.
Both the USA and England crashed out in the last 16 and, noting Jagger’s appearance with Lucas, his Brazilian son by Luciana Gimenez, at Friday’s game against the Dutch, the media made him an easy target.
“Who will the Rolling Stones frontman support next?” several websites asked.
“The curse of Mick Jagger continues,” said sports daily Lance, adding: “With his support for the United States and England and Brazil the leader of the Rolling Stones has been collecting only defeats at the World Cup.” (AFP)

Hey hey Argentina is the best team, it was just not there day..!!!

They are obviously not the best team or we wouldn't have butchered them like this!

I mean we didn't just win, we outplayed them! "Not their day" is a bullshit excuse and you know it! ^^
Germany is simply the best team of the cup! Only Holland is maybe on our level or at least close.

Even better game than against England! Best game of cup so far! Most beautiful one-touch football. Style, Team-spirit, technique, goals and a humiliated Maradonna, this game had it all!

4:0 that is so incredible!!!
