The matter that I am going to post is quite offbeat to the discussion so far on this thread. But the conversation given below took form because of my reading of an ENGLISH text on Indian history.

My grandmother, who is 96 years old and lives in Kasganj, UP, has come to Delhi to visit us. Whenever I get a chance to meet her, I tell her about many things like how a mobile phone makes us hear the voice of people far away or which is the largest fish in the world etc. Today I was reading a history book and thought about telling a few things about our country's history to her and ask her a few questions as well.

This is how the conversation took place. I showed her a map of India from the book and then......................

Me : Amma! Batao yeh kya hai ( Tell me what it is) ?

( I was thinking she might not know how the map of India looks like )

Grandmom : Kaa hai je ( What is this ) ?

Me : Yeh India ka naksha hai ( This is the map of India ) !

( Then she asked me something that left me dumbfounded )

Grandmom : Kitay hai je ( Where is it ) ?

Me : Aap janti hain hamare desh ka kya naam hai ( Do you know what the name of our country is ) ?

( I thought she would say Hindustan )

Grandmom : ( Pondered for a while and then replied ) Aligarh !

( I was shocked to hear this but asked her......... )

Me : Aligarh ? Aligarh to ek shahar hai ! Aapko pata hai aap kaun se rajya mein rehti hain ? ( Aligarh is a city ! Do you know in which state you reside ).

Grandmom : Kaa kai ? Raaj ? kaiso raaj ? Met tain ka maalam ? Main kahin parhi likhi thore hi hoon ! ( What did you say ? What raaj ? How would I know ? I am not literate ! )

Me : Aap Uttar Pradesh mein rehti hain ! Aapko nahin pata ? ( You live in Uttar Pradesh ! Don't you know ? )

Grandmom : Hambay ? Moye ka kanno hai pato kar ke ? Main to kabhain kasganj se aage gai naaye hoon ! ( Oh really ? And what do I have to do by knowing this ? I have never stepped outside kasganj ! )

Me : Kya ? Aap to is samay kasganj se bahar hi hain Dilli mein ! Aap kabhi lucknow gai hain ? ( What ? But you are now out of Kasganj in Delhi ! Have you ever been to Lucknow ?)

Grandmom : Bo to kabhi kabhaar ke lay ghoom jaat hain ! Vaise hamein kachhu maalam thore hi hai ! Nakhlau bahut door hai , gaye hain ham ek aadh baar ! ( I just visit you seldom ! By the way, I don't know anything about other places ! Lucknow is very far away,I have been there once or twice ! )

I then told her that our country's name is Bharat and its far bigger than what she might have thought about it earlier. and the city is Lucknow and not Nakhlau.

The conversation thus ended

Is it fairly common for our country's illiterate and village folks to not know about their country or state. Just leave aside the state but everyone is expected to at least know the name of his/her country.

Is this lack of knowledge about our nation widespread or is my grandmother an exceptional case ?

Many factors can play a part regarding the state of affairs you have mentioned above.My experience was rather opposite.I was in 4th class.My grandmother was visiting us and during a session of casual conversation with me.She asked me,"Challo mughe Pakistan ka Qaumi tarana sunao ub"."Now recite the National anthem of Pakistan for me."
I was of a bit shy type then.I started and i knew that it's a usual routine stuff.But my shyness overtook everything and i jumbled it up from,

پرچم ستارہ و هلال ----------parcham-e-sitāra-o hilāl (The flag of the crescent and star).

It was embarrassing because my mom was there and both the ladies started smiling at me.
I ended it up somehow and pulled in my reins,to start again and the second time it went well for me.

She is not with us.May her soul rest in eternal peace.

I think we should blame the computer for this. I used to have very good cursive handwriting when I was in school. Now I can barely read my own writing.

I had joined this forum especially to enhance my english skills.The debate over topics and commenting is secondary for me.I read more and comment less as my post count suggests.

Whenever I see new words here,I note them in my notebook with their meanings,usage etc.
I have almost 200 words and phrases jotted down in the notebook,which I learnt here.
And I go through the notebook every few days.It has really helped me a lot and I have added many new words to my vocabulary.

So again guys and gals on the forum,Thank You.

My dad has been doing something similar for past 50 years or so, ever since his high school days. Back in the days, they started teaching English in year 8, even then he ended up doing his Bachelors, Masters, PhD and M.Phil in English literature.

He reads a lot, even today wakes up at 4:30 in the morning without fail, and reads till 10:00am. He jots down every new phrase or words he comes across in newspapers and books(even the modern trendy words), writes down the usage in a sentence, few synonyms, and thats how he keeps improving his vocabulary.

He is like a walking talking dictionary. If I ever have to find out the meaning of a word I just ask him, he not only tells me the meaning, gives me a couple of synonyms too. I wish I had discipline like him!

Ya my friends say I have very good english handwriting( I also think that ) . But they also say I have very crappy hindi handwriting ( I agree with them once again ).

You seem like a young chap in his teens - I'd like to tell you that this is borderline disrespectful.

You can't compare your knowledge with her wisdom and not to forget any other old age issues she might have at the moment.
