Thailand Naval Ships visits Sri Lanka

Two Royal Thai Naval Ships, HTMS Similan and HTMS Narathiwat arrived at the Port of Colombo on 22nd July 2011 with the Inspector of Operations Division, RTF of the Royal Thai Navy, Captain Paradon Puangkeaw onboard.

They were ceremonially welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy on arrival in accordance with naval tradition.

The ships are en route to the Gulf of Aden to participate in counter piracy operations.

HTMS Similan is an Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) ship with a displacement of 22,000 tons. It is 171.45 meters in length and carries a complement of 231 naval personnel commanded by Captain Noppadol Boonchatru.

HTMS Narathiwat is an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) with a displacement of 1635 tons. It is 94.5 meters in length and carries a complement of 116 naval personnel commanded by Commander Niwat Jitpoolion.

Thais are fine people to work with. Sharing a large portion of waters with them, it is best that both Sri Lanka and India develop strong Naval ties with Thailand in order to combat any emergencies or pirate assaults in the region. There can also be a check for hi-end wanted fugitives of each of our countries through regular meetings and establishing a dedicated naval security monitoring system.
