BANGKOK – Thailand's military government approved a massive budget to upgrade the country's railways including high-speed rail that would eventually link with China.

Transport Ministry permanent secretary Soithip Traisuth says the junta approved 741.46 billion baht ($23.3 billion) to build two high-speed train routes.

Similar plans by the government ousted in a May 22 military coup were scrapped by a court.

Soithip said construction of the two routes within Thailand will start in 2015 and should be completed by 2021.

Thailand will also expand dual-track railways.

The previous government passed a bill to borrow 2 trillion baht ($63 billion) to improve transport and water infrastructure but a court struck down the plan as unconstitutional.

The junta has been considering total spending of 3 trillion baht ($94 billion) on transport and other infrastructure.

Yes. I checked Thai newspaper this morning also report the same thing, except the word "connect with China".
The railroad will be 1.435 meter wide, which is the same size of China railroad. This is not high speed train. It is predicted to run 160 km/h.

The interesting is the both links to Lao from Lam Chabang in Gulf of Thailand. Why Lam Chabang? There they are industrial regions where many types of factories are there. It als has a deep sea port. What kind of goods Lao want to consume so much that it needs 2 rail links?

Suppose they are to connect with China, what kind of goods they want to transport to Gulf of Thailand?

Anyone understand, plz tell me.

Look at the map of Thailand. Do you see where Phuket is? Do you see the South of Thailand connects 2 Oceans?
On the west of southern Thailand is the Indian Ocean, and on the East the Pacific Ocean. That means Thai "Land" is the links that can link to East Asia continentals without passing Strait of Malaca.

China is very interested in bypassing the strait of malacca. Very interested. If Thailand choose to be our friend, I will say this, Thailand can be a hub for trade, China is a huge trade nation, imagine our goods passing through Thailand.

BTW, it's not strategic, it's just shorter time.

We will support Thailand regardless of government, we are pragmatic that way, we take things as they are, not as they should be.

The rails in question can always be upgraded to quasi high-speed lines at a later date。

160km/h is good for both passenger and freight transport。

Bangkok Post quoted the Thai Ministry of Transport Minister Suoti · Tai Susi said, "high-speed rail lane design standards will be retained, but the maximum speed of trains will be reduced from 200 km to 160 km in a future period, once had more invested can always upgrade to a higher speed. "feasibility study will commence soon.

Is the Thailand and Lao ready to absorb our manufacturing expertise? We can shift our production over while we maintain supply chain.

Here in Thailand job is not scarce. Labor is scarce. If there are mega construction projects like Myanmar Dawai-Bangkok Links, labor scarcity will be so severe. Labor price will rise.

What we are a little afraid of about Link to China is the competition with local companies. We are a little afraid of Chinese brands/product will kills local brands. But not that much.

Very easy to say job is not scarce because majorities in Thailand still live with rural lifestyle and work in the rural don't earn as much as urban jobs. Sooner or later, we will have to outsource our manufacturing to others. Thailand can be one country to absorb a small percentage.

Take the high-speed train from China, Thailand choose RIGHT.

We will have the railway from China => Laos => Thailand => Malaysia => Singapore.
