Tesla to set up factory in Indonesia and target 1 million unit installed capacity

.
Yes but that would not be an easy road. Indonesia has no lithium reserve, the most important mineral for making battery. Lithium must be imported. Nickel is low grade. Battery requires high grade. Processing from low to high is very expensive.
The news has been debunked by Musk himself. Tesla right now needs more market growth and new markets, not new production facilities. Nobody knows what batteries will be used in EVs in 5 years from today, Tesla is doing fine with outsourced Batteries right now as they can change the battery technology whenever they wish with outsourced Batteries.

.
Nothing against Indonesia but Must has debunked this news.

Elon Musk and Indonesia government is under negotiation. Musk would not want to be seen as an eager party. The truth is this Week Indonesia Government and Elon Musk will have another discussion

Most probably there is a leak within Elon Musk team, this leak will weaken his position if the deal is reached since the negotiation will still continue within this week

Tesla has just bought Indonesian processed nickel last year around 5 billion USD

This would be big news.
Congrats to Indonesia if true! This would enhance the EV technology in SEA.

Thanks, the chance is 70 : 30

There is still probabilty the deal is not reached, but we still have many Japanese brands industry in here and also Korean that uses Indonesia not just as market, but also manufacturing base as total car exports for CBU and CKD has already reached 1 million units in 2022. Japanese will likely go full electric as well and Korean Hyundai has already had plan to just concentrate on EV cars starting in 2030.

.
1 million in 2022

Our industries also produce steels and aluminium raw material for cars industry in here, not to mention we dont have energy problem like we have seen in India in 2021 and 2022.

Our electricity is in surplus and with lower coal price for our state owned electricity companies, PT PLN. Coal price for PLN is just 70 USD per ton, steel industry also get lower coal price around 90 USD per ton. Both lower than international price.
Is this all annual car sales or passenger car sales, looks like a lot

The thing with being low cheap labour is that one day, if the country becomes middle income, the big companies will move the factories to another 3rd world country. Happened to Korea then China and now other countries. Better to build own world class brands.

We would not follow Vietnamese step by making Finvas or previously Malaysia with Proton.

We are not going to go against big boys in car industries.

We would rather play in niche market in EV industries and we have PT Pindad already

Pindad Morino, this is EV car

For EV motorcyles, there are already several Indonesian brands

I think that won’t change much radically.
Lithium will remain the king.
The material offers most lightweight, most energy density.
Then the question what is the best material for cathode? Some mean silicium. If successful in practice, EV battery can run 1,000 km and more with one charge.

Vietnam is also promoting the industrialization of their electric vehicles, and there are also new forces of electric vehicles, which seem to be in full swing, rising stars in Southeast Asia. However, Indonesia has the advantages of domestic demand and resources, and may have higher potential than Vietnam

What I mean niche market is like off road community, rich Indonesian who dont care about the price competitiveness but just feel good to have Pindad cars, a company in Indonesia that makes military grade vehicle, stuff like that.

So they dont need to make factory that can produce 100.000 cars per year to stay price competitive within the same class of car market, they just produce small amound of cars within thousands per year to serve Indonesian Military, Indonesian Police, and special group within our civilian that loves to have Pindad made car

So they can still have profits with just limited amount of car production. They could be a big thing in civilian car market, but if they want to reach that target, they want to do it gradually and try to keep the business line profitable.

That is different with Finvas or Malaysian Proton business strategy.

Your small amount of military use cannot directly promote the industrialization of your country, only good product commercialization can promote industrialization, and Vietnamese electric vehicles are not cheap in the United States, and are more expensive than Tesla and other brands. Sometimes mass production at a suitable price is also a comprehensive capability. If Vietnamese cars are too expensive, there is no way to share the cost and improve economies of scale.

Indonesia follows industrialization like Thailand. A place for foreign manufacturers. Vietnam follows China, developing own brands. We want people to enjoy made in Vietnam great products. For us Viet people it’s very embarrassing to buy Chinese products.

For industrialization, we rather chose to invite foreign brands that have already been successful in the market.

They are then making cooperation with our local companies, so for example we have Toyota Indonesia and Daihatsu Indonesia that has made cooperation with Astra, our national companies. That is our strategy for industrialization in the automotive industry, other brands like trucks with Hino or other brands has cooperation with Bakrie group part manufacturing business.

That is our strategy. We dont have large market like China and India, so we adopt different strategy. Those foreign brands then can use the production in Indonesia as base. Unlike Malaysia Proton that has similar strategy like Vinfast Vietnam. Inviting foreign brands into Malaysia will end up become the competitor of Proton.

And the result is Indonesia produce and export much more cars than Malaysia

Other industries in Indonesia also supply the raw material like Krakatau steel (steel) and Inalum (Aluminium)

I understand that Indonesia is currently taking the Thai route, which only focuses on production and processing, and has no intention of independent R&D and design. However, this route is relatively easy, and it is an easier route to become a major automobile country.

This is also good, and it can also drive employment and part of the supply system in the country.

This is not the case in Thailand. Vietnam is more urgent to support its own industry
