BEIJING, Jan 11 (Reuters) - U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) sold 70,847 China-made vehicles in December, the highest monthly rate since it started manufacturing in Shanghai in 2019, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed on Tuesday.

Tesla's December sales, which included 245 for export, were almost three times the amount achieved in the same month last year and 34% higher than November's sales. read more

It also brought Tesla's total sales of China-made cars for last year to at least 473,078, according to Reuters' calculations of CPCA's data, which prior to April did not publish figures for Tesla's China-made car exports.

This accounts for around half of 936,000 vehicles the U.S. automaker delivered globally last year.

Tesla's Shanghai factory, which started delivering vehicles at the end of 2019, makes electric Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles for domestic and international markets, including Germany and Japan.

The automaker, which has been able to surmount supply chain woes experienced by rivals to post record quarterly deliveries, said during its third-quarter results in October that the Shanghai plant's potential annual output exceeded 450,000 vehicles. [ read more ]

Tu Le, Beijing-based managing director at Sino Auto Insights, said the December numbers showed that the Tesla brand in China remained strong and that it was also operationally "impressive" given that the Shanghai factory had the capacity to make around 42,000 vehicles a month on average.

"They were well over that number in December. And this is despite the chip and battery shortages that other EV makers dealt with."

China's EV market is dominated by domestic brands including BYD (002594.SZ) and Wuling - a local marque that is part of General Motors (GM.N). Tesla is only the foreign brand in the top 10, according to Shanghai-based consultancy Automobility.

The CPCA also said Chinese EV maker Nio Inc (NIO.N) delivered 10,489 cars last month, a year-on-year increase of 49.7%, while Xpeng Inc (9868.HK) delivered 16,000 vehicles. Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) said it sold more than 13,787 ID. series EVs in China in December, the fourth consecutive month in which the ID. family has delivered more than 10,000 units in China.

CPCA said passenger car sales in December in China totalled 2.14 million, down 7.7% from a year earlier.

"This also means that Han EV sales in December were 10,301 units"

China's EV market is still dominated by BYD, with over 90,000 EVs sold in December, amid Xi'an lock-down where BYD's two main production bases are located.

BTW, Wuling is NOT part of GM, but part of SAIC. Saying Wuling is part of GM is like saying Daimler-Mercedes-Benz is part of Geely. LMAO...

We have no problem saying the Wuling Mini is a 100% Chinese EV design. You can take all the credit for it.

Still better than Tesla the FWOCB (Four Wheels on Chinese Batteries) which got nothing of its own...That is why shameless media still wants to take the credit (GM even counts Wuling sales as theirs, which is hilarious...)...Not to mention we have all kinds of high-end EVs. Tesla takes merely 5% of our EV sales, yet you are boasting like there is no tomorrow...LMAO...

Lol! Speaking of taking undeserved credit!
Tesla has been selling hundreds of thousands of cars for years and they just added CATL to their battery supplier list two months ago and now you are taking credit for their entire success.

Not really, Tesla sales is nothing when they use Panasonic or LG batteries, until they use CATL batteries in 2020 and will continue to use (Not two months ago, you liar)...
BTW, I really 'admire' Tesla's sales department or rather boasting department: Tesla do not produce a single piece of battery for its cars, yet make people think Tesla is a battery leader, Tesla can't even do a L2 autonomous driving properly without killing someone, yet name its dinosaur vision camera 'auto driving' 'FSD' or fool self driving... Tesla is just a big hoax to get fool's money from the stock market, nothing else...lol...

Well a year ago the Tesla Model 3 was crowned the #1 best selling EV model in China for 2020...and it didn't have CATL batteries.

and of course the world too in 2020

also the world too in 2019

also the world too in 2018

Even if those batteries were crappy Tesla is still considered the Gold Standard in China compared to the local EVs so with CATL they will simply do even better in 2022. For 2021 they will have to settle for the #2 spot for the Model 3 and the #3 spot for the Model Y behind the #1 spot Wuling Mini.

With CATL in 2022 maybe they can get their Model 2 out the door and then have the #2, #3, and #4 spot by the end of 2022.

Whatever, Tesla were FWOJB/FWOKB you know what I mean, and they were nothing on the global scene in terms of sales, and from 2020, they became FWOCB, and then you have the boast like this thread...
It seems they will continue to be FWOCB for a long time...
Anyway, Good work for the boasting department of Tesla to sell more Chinese batteries, and get more money from the stock market for CATL as well...

LOL! I guess you are hiding your eyes from the global links I provided.

Actually Chinese EV's are nothing in the Global scene..even with BYD promising over a decade ago to be the big player. The BYD Han EV struggles to stay above 10,000/month in China with zero sales in the rest of the world.

2011 Big promises...empty reality

Well, 80% of the 3.3 million electric cars sold in China last year are from Chinese EV companies, accounting for nearly half of the Global total (Yes, the rest of the world is insignificant in comparison), and that is nothing in the Global scene...OK, you mean China does not belong to the global, China is from another dimension...LMAO...

@Hamartia Antidote @F-22Raptor

Why can't you guys dedicate one single thread to Tesla cars instead of publishing monthly car sales figures separately?

I have a better idea. Just in your mind whenever you see the word Tesla here just substitute a phrase that is more comfortable to your eyes and that you would not complain about if you saw multiple threads of it..like "the USD dollar is collapsing" or "US hegemony.." or "the US needs HSR" or "US infrastucture.."

This way you'll be super happy!!!!! A win-win scenario!!!
