Terrorist Attack in Peshawar Market

Large blast hits Peshawar market

At least 16 people have been killed and dozens wounded by a large blast in a market in Peshawar, Pakistani.

Buildings were set on fire after the blast and plumes of smoke were seen drifting over the north-western city.

Pakistan has seen an increase in such attacks in recent weeks as the military carries out an operation against Taliban militants in South Waziristan.

The blast comes as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton begins a visit to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

Pakistani television showed footage of burning shops in the Peepal Mandi area of Peshawar.

Police official Anwar Shah told the AFP news agency the blast had been caused by a car bomb.

"It was a huge bomb blast, heard in almost all the city," he said.

Zafar Iqbal, a doctor at the city's main hospital, told AFP dozens of people had been wounded, with some in a critical condition.

Sorry, i have been sort of repeating this question. Are'nt this guys against the GoP and Armed forces..... was any such target in near vicinity? Why attack civilian's?

So that the morale & will of the people goes down and they ask the govt to halt the operation into the TTP heartland & withdraw.

No matter how many attacks they do on the security forces, army will go after them. But if you demoralize the people the chance that army will halt its operation increases. But up til now its backfiring, peoples hatred is increasing & their resolve to end this evil increasing.

As per Edhi resoureces around 80 dead, which is not confirmed as yet....this blast has just proved what this ba$turd muslim khan said to the media that they will make Pakistan like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Inshallah we will get them.

official sources confirm 70+ dead & 150+ injured.

Powerful car bomb kills at least 57 in Peshawar market

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A powerful car bomb ripped through a bustling marketplace in Peshawar, killing at least 57 people on Wednesday, officials said.

The blast at the Meena Bazaar injured 150 people, according to Dr. Zafar Iqbal of Lady Reading Hospital. The market is a labyrinth of shops popular with women in the Peepal Mandi section of the city.

A suicide car bombing on October 9 in Khyber Bazaar, a commercial hub in Peshawar, killed at least 49 people and injured 135 others.

Peshawar is the capital of the North West Frontier Province, where the Pakistan army has been engaged in an intense military offensive to rout militants who have launched attacks in the country and in neighboring Afghanistan.

Despite the offensive, militants have continued to strike with relative impunity in Pakistan, raising concerns about the ability of the government forces to maintain control.

U.S. President Barack Obama signed legislation this month providing an additional $7.5 billion in assistance to Pakistan over the next five years. The White House is working on a comprehensive review of U.S. strategy in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan.

Peshawar is 103 miles (167 km) from the capital, Islamabad, where U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Wednesday. It sits on the main supply route into Afghanistan and is the gateway to Pakistan's ungoverned tribal regions.
