Terror plan foiled, Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist arrested
DEHRADUN: A joint team of Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) led by Manikant Mishra on Friday night arrested a 33-year-old Pak-trained Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist identified as Ghulam Nabi Sheikh alias Javed Qureshi along with his cousin Tanveer Ahmad from Patel Nagar.
Uttarakhand IG (Garhwal Range) M.A.Ganpati said the arrests were made from the residence of 21-year-old Tanveer Ahmad during an intensive checking and search operation conducted by police on the eve of Passing -Out-Parade(POP) held at Indian Military Academy (IMA) on Saturday.
IG Ganpati and Dehradun SSP G.S.Martolia told reporters on Saturday that the search operation was conducted on Central intelligence agencies' tip off that some dreaded terrorists had planned to attack IMA during POP.
The police said that Ghulam Nabi Sheikh who belonged to Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir, had been a Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen since 2007 and its District Commander since 2002. IG Ganpati said that Sheikh had gone to Pakistan through Muzaffarabad in 1993-94 and stayed there till 1997-98 for training in arms and ammunition by Pakistani agencies.According to senior police officers, Sheikh was wanted by J&K police in more than 14 militancy-related cases and other heinous crimes in terrorist-infested Doda district.
Dehradun SSP Martolia said that Tanveer Ahmad who had been working as a daily wage worker for the last 4 to 5 years in Dehradun, was arrested for allegedly sheltering Sheikh. SSP Martolia said that the police had taken the duo on remand to ensure their detailed interrogation by different Central and state intelligence agencies.
