RAJOURI, July 20: Members of majority community in Rajouri today threatened to observe bandh on Tuesday if the police do not arrest the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists for burning of alleged ISIS flag, with ‘Kalima Tayyaba’ from holy Quran written on it on Eid day.
Clarifying that it had no intention to hurt the sentiments of any community, the VHP on the other hand asked the protestors to demonstrate against ISIS for writing a ‘Kalma’ on its flag. “We had only burnt the ISIS flag and we did not know as to what in Persian was written on it,’’ said the state VHP patron Dr Ramakant Dubey and provincial president Leela Karan Sharma.
Led by Khateeb of the local Jama Masjid, Ghulam Rasool, members of the majority community under the banner of Muslim Welfare Association and Tehri-e-Ghulama-nae-Mustafa took out a procession to Gujjar Mandi Chowk demanding arrest of people who first wrote the ‘Kalima’ on the flag and then burnt it.
Giving the local police time till evening for registration of a case and arrest of the culprits, local leaders of majority community clarified that they had no objection to the burning of ISIS flag, but for writing of ‘Kalima Tayyaba’ on it by hand. Both these organizations had on Sunday also taken out a procession in the town giving police time till Monday noon for apprehension of the accused.
As tension mounted in the town, which had always been prone to communal tension at the slightest provocation, the district administration has deployed police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel in strength at vulnerable places. The police have raised nakas at various places to check vehicles.
DIG for Rajouri-Poonch, AK Atri said that the administration was trying to defuse tension by holding meetings with leaders of both the communities. “We are working on two-three options to ensure peace in the town,’’ he added.
Last time in 2012, communal clashes had taken place in the town following hate speech by VHP leader Praveen Togadia forcing the administration to impose curfew in the town for several days. Since then, Togadia was not allowed to enter the state until BJP came to power in coalition with PDP in March this year.
