3G will free nation of digital divide: PM

Sun, Oct 14th, 2012 6:19 pm BdST

Dhaka, Oct 14 (bdnews24.com)— Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the 3G mobile communications services and sad her government moving to ensure a digital divide-free digital Bangladesh for all its citizens.

Hasina inaugurated state-run mobile-phone operator TeleTalk's third generation mobile telephony by pressing a button at a glittering formal ceremony at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Teletalk will distribute 400,000 3G-enabled SIMs for capital Dhaka initially.

The third generation means it comes after GPRS and EDGE. The advantages of 3G services include faster data connectivity which means one can download faster and web surfing will be a lot more fun.

It will give uninterrupted video streaming on phones, enable video calls and big MMS and be good for data intensive applications. The service is being tagged 'experimental' as the policies regarding it are yet to be finalised.

"We have moved a lot ahead in reaching our goal of ensuring free flow of information for the empowerment of people," she said at the programme.

Hasina unfurled the new commercial service with a video call to President Mohammad Zillur Rahman first and later she talked to the students of Azimpur Girls Schools, where she had studied in her childhood.

The programme was told that the new technology will ease high speed exchange of information and enable individuals to hold video conferences at distant places and help traffic police avoid the unwanted jam by observing movement of vehicles.

Along with helping distance learning, it will also open up a vast array of entertainment options too. Both mobile sets of the caller and receiver have to support 3G SIM cards if they wish to have avail themselves of service.

The video calls, which have a 10-second pulse, will cost Tk 2 per minute with a Teletalk SIM card.

Bangladesh gets 3G, finally

Sun, Oct 14th, 2012 1:33 pm BdST

Dhaka Oct 14 (bdnews24.com)—Bangladesh ended a long wait on Sunday when it finally launched the third generation mobile communication technology that will, among other things, give millions faster connectivity.

At a formal ceremony, the Prime Minister called the President to officially launch the service by the state-owned TeleTalk, which will distribute 400,000 SIMs for capital Dhaka initially.

The third generation means it comes after GPRS and EDGE. The advantages of 3G services include faster data connectivity which means one can download faster and web surfing will be a lot more fun.

It will give uninterrupted video streaming on phones, enable video calls and big MMS and be good for data intensive applications.

A senior official with the TeleTalk told bdnews24.com that TeleTalk Bangladesh Limited would publish advertisements in the newspapers about 3G service this month.

According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, until August, Teletalk had nearly 1.4 million subscribers of which only 25,000 subscribers are using its internet connection while the six mobile-phone operators had a combined 99.5 million subscribers.

Being the state-run operator, TeleTalk was given the opportunity to launch 3G experimentally before other operators. It was supposed to launch the service in March for six months but deferred the launch for 'technical reasons.'

The recently approved 3G licence draft says the spectrum would be auctioned by this year. TeleTalk will have to take the 3G spectrum spending the same amount of money like others even if it does not take part in the auction.

Apart from Bangladesh's private operators Grameenphone, Banglalink, Citycell, Airtel and Robi, foreign companies will also be able to take part in the auction.

The benefit of 3G is its higher bit rates which support many bandwidth-intensive applications.

Two main advantages of 3G are high-speed wireless Internet access for efficient use of the available radio frequency (RF) spectrum and the projected expansion in worldwide usage of wireless services.

The other benefits include packet-based data which offers a number of advantages over the existing circuit-switched methods used for transporting mobile voice.

It also allows increased call volumes and support for multimedia data applications, such as video and photography.

Most of the developed world is already using 4G and next one to be introduced is 5G (already introduced by Apple?) which will be wireless wifi Internet mobiles. However, with the introduction of 3G, BD telephone sector promotes itself to a higher stage of development.

I believe 4G should be introduced at a much later time because the 3G makers, system builders and operators must get profit out of their 3G business before they use huge capital for 4G.

Can not speak behalf of Japan but in USA we are starting to enjoy 4G LTE services mainly in metropolitan city area. I believe 5 G is not available as of now.

5G ?? Dude, 4G itself lies very near to the band alloted for TV channels.. also, 5G won't happen before the entire country is 4G and the cable companies are given a band much higher up..

Btw, Here in kolkata and Bangalore we also have 4G LTE services. They are very expensive though.

5G is still in the lab . We can think about it say in around 2020 . So chill guys.
