A strike in favour of a new state in the Telangana region of southern India's Andhra Pradesh state has entered its 18th day.

Some 800,000 protesting government employees have stopped work, leading to a shutdown of offices, schools and colleges.

Public transport is off the roads and widespread power outages are being reported from the region.

Andhra Pradesh saw violent protests for and against the proposal last year.

With a population of 40 million, the proposed Telangana state comprises 10 of Andhra Pradesh's 23 districts, including the state capital and India's sixth most populous city, Hyderabad.

Normal life in Hyderabad has come to a standstill on Friday after a fresh strike call by pro-Telangana activists, the BBC's Omer Farooq says.

For the last 18 days, 800,000 government employees - mostly teachers, public transport workers and coal mine workers - have been on strike, demanding a new state of Telangana.

As a result, schools, colleges and government offices in the region are shut.

A strike by the workers of Singareni Collieries Company has led to power cuts - electricity is mainly coal-fed in the region.

Last week, protesters blocked trains in the region, and a supporter of the new state threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the top of a hoarding in Hyderabad.

And the party leading the demand for statehood, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), is sticking to its position.

Opponents of the move are unhappy that Hyderabad, home to many major information technology and pharmaceutical companies, could become Telangana's new capital.

The final decision on a new state lies with the Indian parliament. But the state assembly must also pass a resolution approving its creation.

Deep divisions have emerged over the Telangana issue in the past two years.

In December 2009, India's Congress party-led government promised that the new state would be formed, but later said more talks were needed.

The announcement prompted widespread protests in the state, and a student committed suicide in support of the formation of Telangana.

I want to get an opinion from Indian members on this. My friend is from Andhra Pradesh, & she says that the people from Telangana speak a different kind of Telugu (it has Urdu mixed in it) compared to what is spoken else where. That makes me think it is pretty much a communal issue. But then, there have been elements of, & linkages made to the Maoists as well to Telangana. Will the Maoists get stronger or weaker when Telangana is created? We all know that Jharkhand was created from Bihar, & Maoism has increased in that state.

language in india changes its dialect after few miles...in maharashtra you will hear marathi which is mixed with telgu, kannada, tulu words...

but when a state demands for division it is mostly because of political, economical reasons and not for language..

^^ Only problem with Telengana imo is Hyderabad issue... Just divide the twin cities between two and get it over with,,
This govt. has tendency to make a mountain out of a mole..Pathetic Politics..

telanganians feel they have been neglected economically and all development was limited to hyderbad...I think they should develop a city that will compete with hyderabad rather than claiming whole hyderabad or dividing it...but what about people in hyderabad? do they support telangana?

Language is just one lolly pop they give it to those feeble minded people who are willing to go throw stones at the police @ 5rs/stone nothing more..... Everything is politically/financially motivated.... One state = One chief minister + ministers ... Two states = [ One chief minister + ministers ] x 2.... Therefore more assholes to loot the people and the state of its resources.. Every tom dick and harry wants a piece of the cake.... And language changes like in every 50 miles here.. Heck the state where I stay has some 10 languages.... If they start dividing states on the basis of that.., we will have more than 900 states in the country...!!!!

From what I understand the Telegana region was under Nizam and under developed while Coastal Andhra was under British and people there were much more educated and prosperous. So when united Andhra Pradesh was formed coastal Andhra people had the upper hand in every sector and the Telegana people felt left out. So the Telegana demand is basically a political and economical one. Pls feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Hyderabad is inside Telegana. Sharing of capital looks like a way out like Chandigarh is shared b/n Punjab & Haryana.

People of Hyderabad have nothing to do with the whole issue... They feel the best will be declare Hyd as an Union territory, and let both Andhra Pradesh and Telengana go to the dogs...!! This is what people of Hyd think., have 7 friends from that place and all of em have this opinion....!!!

telengana issue is not a communal issue.its a regional, economical issue.its a clash betwen two region of andhra pradesh.one wants to become separate state from andhra.andhra itself created by dividing other state.after the independance of our country.
i think hydrabad is the main issue both wants the city as their capital.nobody wants to lose hydrabad.

from this image i take back my previous comments...and i do not know how can hyderabad be divided when telangana claims the adjacent districts too.

Some new states like Chhatishgarh are totally justified.. But some like Jharkhand are created just for politics..Just one look at Jharkhand says all..This Telangana issue is also similar to Jharkhand..

I am not saying that this is a lingual problem. But my friend, born & raised in Andhra Pradesh told me that the people of Telangana see themselves as different from the rest of the people in Andhra Pradesh, & feel they have been neglected in the past. I also remember listening to this Muslim speak (I believe he belonged to Telangana) who mentioned Hyderabad Deccan's history pre-1947, & how they had been neglected afterwards in every way, as well as their religion:

I have lived in Telangana region for 17 yrs or so..let me tell u..
It is not a COMMUNAL issue(majority of ppl in Telangana are hindus)..yes Telangana telugu has a minute influence of urdu..but the problem here is not about language, or culture(there is a difference in customs though)..The issue here is economy and most importantly political..

But then, there have been elements of, & linkages made to the Maoists as well to Telangana. Will the Maoists get stronger or weaker when Telangana is created? We all know that Jharkhand was created from Bihar, & Maoism has increased in that state.

I would say the rise in Maoism will be a concern...As u pointed out Jharkand and also Chattisgarh have seen a rise in Maoist incidents..
Andhra Pradesh has seen the highest success rate in eradicating Naxals in 90's(Maoists)..More than 95 % maoists from AP have either been killed in encounters or have fled the state(AP police has developed very successful way of dealing with Naxalism..a concept of ironfist in a velvet glove)..I would say the rise in Maoism is a concern for many govt officials particularly Police(both in Andhra and Telangana regions)..

Let me ask u ..u inturn can ask ur friend...if and when Telangana is created..what will be the population %age of Muslims in Telanaga??

The funny thing is since ur trying to make this discussion turn into a communal issue..Most muslims dont want to be in Telangana...they want a United AP or a seperate Hyderabad(Union territory where they will have major political power..).Most muslims live in around Hyderabad..i would say 90% of muslims live here..in rest of telangana the numbers fall to less than 10%..so plz lets not make this into something it is not..

Pure & simple.: the only way KCR can become a Chief minister of a state is if telangana becomes seperate state..That sir is the WHOLE issue...
