Tejas grounded after snag in landing gear

:o:
you are comparing devine Tejas with F-22 & F-16. Tejas is light year ahead in tech thre is no match.

No he is comparing that such incidents are quiet normal in case of a fighter plane development. Now say who is  Try to understand the context of a post before replying.

Whats the glitch bdw? If they could not retract L/G and had to fly with them extended then it means that some micro switch esp one of the the wheels on ground switches has gone U/S that forbid the L/G to retract or may be the L/G handle has gone U/S. Having said so if thats not the case then it means an inherent design flaw has come up right now which was dormant till this time.

We've done 1000s of flights without a glitch. This is probably just a one off. But until it's investigated, standard procedure dictates they'll have to ground all jets. Happens all the time.

Do you have any idea of difference of Twin tyre in the forward landing gear and single tyre.

Other than many other reasons one i think is the heavy nose of the aircraft which prompts designers to go for dual wheel nose gear. As Tejas is suppose to undergo more avionics related upgrades esp AESA radar etc and most of it would be positioned in nose area, which would more likely make nose more heavy (keeping the Centre of Gravity in Limit ofcourse) so HAL has to go for this very configuration. Experts can chip in more.

I think you are right, Tejas have to fitted with more and more electronic equipments and sensors compactly, therefore they are getting so much problems-- fitment, space, heat.

Sir my point was that Tejas program is mature enough not to worry for these minor glitches. And when they are handed over to IAF they are suppose to follow SOPs of IAF and not that every small discrepancy grounds whole fleet. Whole fleet is only grounded when same very fault in whole fleet is suspected and thats not a routine matter but a serious issue to look into.

I smell drama here. IAF wants more Rafael and might had did something with good Tejas so Indian Government considers what they are saying.

For almost 3,000 hours of flying, the made-in-India combat aircraft “Tejas” was a pilot’s delight, but within months of joining the Indian Air Force (IAF)’s fleet, these jets have been grounded because of nagging problems with their landing gear.

This major snag — the first since the military jet’s maiden flight in January 2001 — has showed up at a time when the country’s air strike wing is contemplating induction of 120 of them to make up for the depleting strength of its squadrons. With the Union government taking a decision to acquire only 36 Rafale fighters instead of 126 as originally planned under the multi-billion dollar, medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) contract, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha has spoken of the need to add at least six squadrons (108 fighter aircraft) to shore up the total strength to 42 squadrons, and indicated his preference for an advanced version of “Tejas”.

Sources in the ministry of defence (MoD) told this newspaper that IAF pilots encountered problems with the landing gear of “Tejas” twice — first in Bengaluru and the second time in Jaisalmer after a round of weapon trials at the Pokhran range. The fighter was flown from Jaisalmer to Bengaluru with its landing gear deployed after the second incident. The upshot: the entire fleet consisting of fighters, the naval variant, trainers and prototypes have been grounded. “Occasionally, test pilots have attempted solo sorties, but the problem with the landing gear persists,” sources added.

Sources in Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Bengaluru, confirmed that the snag has resulted in discontinuation of flights of these military jets but disclosed that the glitch would be fixed soon as the cause for malfunctioning of the landing gear has been identified.

The first “Tejas” combat jet was handed over to the IAF in Bengaluru on January 17, 2015, by defence minister Manohar Parrikar with the first squadron set to be based at an air force station in Sulur, Tamil Nadu.

Very few things India developed for Tejas and landing gear is one of them very shameful situation for HAL and DRDO. Over engineered heavy landing gear has many shortcomings.

This idiom " Batein croro ki dukan pakoro ki" truly reflects state of indian DRDO and other state run weapon manufacturers .

Matter of the fact it has gone through 3000 hour's flying testing without a stop.

Secondly it's snag which will be shorted out soon

That Dick who runs that website doesn't even know difference between Naval LCA landing gear and Air force LCA landing gear and he has used both images of different aircraft for comparison .

Seems some routine technical issue. But why this news had found its way to UK newspaper? Cant IAF/HAL keeps its routine operational issues to themselves?Or its the pro Rafale lobby still at work?
agreed 110%

not just rafale lobby but the whole "foriegn mall lobby " has put up all its wieght against LCA

thing is "foriegn maal lobby" in IAF is still very much active and its like a ego issue for them now and they are plying all kinds of dirty tricks and it will only increase in time to come and LCA will face many hurdels ...... but in the end its good both for designers in HAL/ARDE and related labs and the LCA itself this will hammer owt most of its faults... ride is getting rough by the day for LCA just like darkness is at its peak before dawn .... good luck team LCA

I know it very well but check tejas mk1 land version it have twin set of tyre.

Speaking of tires, did you know they are now being made locally by MRF and they very successful.

Tejas is burdened with 300 kilos of ballast --- dead weight inserted incrementally while designing the fighter, to correct its centre of gravity. I think, 200kg of dead weight is in the nose alone. It will be an easy exchange with AESA.

Sources, told NDTV that changes will be made in the ballast and the landing gear making the Tejas Mark 1-A about 1000 kg lighter than its 6500-kg predecessor. Delivery can begin next year.

So it means that new modified landing gears we will see in the existing Tejas squardons.

The landing gear problem, as reported by Deccan Chronicle newspaper was that the gear would not fold up after take-off.

India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is manufacturing the aircraft with test pilots from the IAF in charge of the test flights. HAL executives said, as claimed by Deccan Chronicle, that “the snag had resulted in discontinuation of flights of these military jets but disclosed that the glitch would be fixed soon as the cause for malfunctioning of the landing gear has been identified.”
