TEAM AUSTRALIA PARTICIPATION AT IDEF 2013
AND ASSOCIATED MISSION IN TURKEY
MAY 2013

Team Defence Australia will be an exhibitor at IDEF to be held 7-10 May 2013 in Istanbul. Team Defence Australia also plans to conduct a trade mission to Ankara following the event to capitalise on defence export opportunities in the region and to
build on existing contacts made during the April 2012 mission to Turkey.
Applications will be accepted from 1 December 2012 to 18 January 2013 from Australian defence companies interested in participating on the Team Defence Australia stand at IDEF. Participation on the stand will be free of charge however participants will be responsible for their flights, accommodation, meals and freight costs display requirements outside the standard exhibition pod configuration described below.

Turkeys Defence Market

Turkeys defence industry is sophisticated and robust, and access to the Turkish defence market provides an excellent opportunity for Australian suppliers to gain entry to wider markets and particularly those of other Islamic countries. The Turkish economy is also strong and continues to achieve growth, envied by many of its neighbours. Turkey is receptive to Australians and Australian companies generally and is very interested in innovative and niche products, particularly if they are not constrained by ITAR requirements. Opportunities exist across all domains as Turkey is successfully manufacturing sophisticated indigenous land, sea, air and electronic warfare platforms. Australian companies producing components or subsystems, systems integration, and innovative solutions in all these areas should seriously consider marketing in Turkey.

IDEF

Held under the auspices of the Turkish Ministry of National Defence, IDEF is tri- service, biennial event which brings together exhibitors, delegations and visitors from around the world. Istanbul has traditionally been at the crossroads of East and West, and IDEF continues this historical role providing an excellent venue for defence companies seeking broad exposure for their products and capabilities.
Team Defence Australias presence at IDEF and on the mission will be led by one of the DEUs Two Star military officers and an exhibitors booklet will be produced for distribution at the event. A series of networking events will also be organised to maximise exposure to Australias defence
industry capabilities.The link for IDEF 2013 ishttp://www.tuyap.com.tr/webpages/idef13/index_eng.php

Team Defence Australia stand

The Team Defence Australia stand at IDEF will be open plan with exhibitors having individual pods (4sqm) each providing a lockable storage cupboard, bench space sufficient to accommodate a laptop computer. There will also be wall space for

display of exhibitor names and flat-screen TV or promotional material and bar stool seating. The Australian Defence Force will be supporting Team Australia at IDEF through the presence of senior uniformed personnel. A series of networking events will also be organised to maximise exposure of Australias defence industry capabilities.
Applications are also invited from defence industry representatives who wish to attend the exhibition but do not wish to take dedicated display floor space on the stand. These participants will be included in Team Australia events and have access to common floor space (use of meeting and storage rooms and refreshment facilities) and export facilitation assistance on an equal basis with exhibiting participants.

Mission to Ankara

Ankara, Turkeys Capital is the headquarters for the Turkish military and head office for many Turkish defence companies. The Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, also based in Ankara, is a major shareholder in many of the major defence companies. Participants in the trade mission will meet with senior decision makers from government, the military and major defence companies in Ankara. The DEU will also explore the feasibility of visiting other major defence companies headquartered elsewhere in Turkey during the mission.
As the mission will provide an opportunity for companies to present their products and capabilities directly to potential customers and at marginal additional cost, companies attending IDEF are encouraged to participate in the Mission. Defence Attaches and other agencies including Austrade will be assisting the DEU to secure appointments which best match the capabilities of participating companies.

Turkeys Unique Geo-strategic Position Influences the Countrys Defence Procurement Policies, Says Frost & Sullivan

Frost & Sullivan forecasts indicate that Turkeys defence budget will continue to rise steadily

London 13 December 2012 Turkey is 15th among the global top military spenders and 6th in Europe, accounting for 1.1 per cent of global military spending for the year 2011. The states unique geo-political condition, where both domestic and foreign security threats remain a genuine concern, has encouraged sustained military spending in contrast to global trends. However, Turkeys main procurement agency, the Undersecretariat of Defence (SSM), has expressed its commitment to reducing Turkeys dependence on foreign procurement and that the modernisation trends should be considered within this context.

Frost & Sullivans recent study on "Revenue Opportunity & Stakeholder Mapping - Turkey Defence Market," finds that the market earned revenues of USD 18.76 billion in 2012 and estimate it to reach USD 24.70 billion in 2021. The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is calculated at 3.29 per cent (2011-2020).

"Turkeys bilateral position as a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) member with significant West Asian associations is being leveraged to drive growth in its domestic defence market," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Yasha Izadpanah, one of the authors of the study. "Investment in domestic manufacturing infrastructure is the principal trend in the Turkish Defence Market at present. This will continue, buoyed by Turkeys steady economy and political intent to establish a self-reliant defence industry."

The Turkish market is dominated by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (TAFF), a governmental organisation that owns a full or partial share in 18 of Turkeys leading defence companies. As the domestic market becomes increasingly self sufficient it can be expected that Turkish companies will become globally competitive, particularly through the exportation of the four key national projects; the Altay Battle Tank, the ANKA MALE UAV, T-129 Attack Helicopter and the Milgem Corvette.

"However, Turkey lacks much of the technology and infrastructure required to fulfill its new military ambitions, which is what makes good business opportunities for companies with advanced capabilities, particularly in air and naval programs," adds Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Koray Ozkal, co-author of the research. Entry to the Turkish market should be supported by a partnership with local companies looking to raise their expertise and industrial infrastructure.

"Frost & Sullivan research indicates that C4ISR and air platforms make 66 per cent of military imports as a result of Turkeys lack of infrastructure. However, the time to build this cooperation is now as the opportunities for partnership will diminish as indigenous technical capability continues to grow in Turkey," he notes.

As budget reduction continues in the US and Europe, the defence industry is required to look toward new markets. Turkeys increasing ventures beyond its borders, act as a bridge to potentially lucrative new markets. This element of the Turkish market should be considered for long term investments.

"Turkey will potentially become a major exporter to GCC and ASEAN countries; and, TAF will play an increasingly integral military role in the Middle East and beyond, requiring next generation technologies," concludes Koray Ozkal. "The Turkish market, however difficult to enter and operate, is an attractive target for companies otherwise dependent on other European and North American Markets."
