The Turkish Electricity Production Company (TEİAŞ) announced on Thursday that it plans to fix major loopholes in regulations in order to further promote the generation of solar energy in the country.

In a written statement TEİAŞ indicated that investors who apply for a license to operate solar power generation fields in a location desired by many will have to submit their project proposals to the Energy Market Regulatory Agency (EPDK) after competing their feasibility studies and necessary documents for licensing. A commission established by TEİAŞ will then select the best offer. The commission, made up of five members, will consider the application that bids the highest amount for the tender.

All of the applications will be considered solar power systems (GES) projects and information on applications that are offered for the same locations will be available on the TEİAŞ website. The applications will be ranked by the commission depending on the highest number of bids. The rest of the applications that are not selected will be out of the ranking but they will be able to bid on different tenders in other locations, on which they have already conducted feasibility studies.

Commenting on the issue, Hüseyin Mert, the director of the GSR Energy Project Development Firm, which built the largest building in Turkey operating on GES --the Denizli Governor’s Office -- called on investors to consider the major opportunities in the field. He said, “We have already determined the most efficient fields to install solar power panels and prepared reports on their power production capacity depending on different technologies so that businesses can invest knowing their profit potential.”

Mert noted the high investment potential in the solar power production in the country and explained, “However, in terms of developing these proposals, the investors should be careful on working with the right experts and companies that provide advice,” adding that some of these companies, GSR being one of them, offer suggestions on locations that are more profitable and have less competition. He said applications need to be submitted on June 10-14, 2013, meaning there is a year left to prepare the documents needed for the proposal.

Noting that the current GES capacity in the country is 600 megawatts (MW), Mert said that since Turkey is located in the sunniest part of Europe, the capacity is expected to increase to over 600 MW. Mert also said it is a great chance for investors since regulations have gone through a much-needed update, which was needed to attract investments in order to cope with Turkey’s rising energy needs.

Turkey has become one of the frontrunners in generating renewable energy in recent years, and investment in the sector is growing massively as it has become clear that this is a sector with enormous growth potential. The government’s support adds a sense of safety to potential investments. The land features of Turkey and its climate are excellent for generating wind, solar and geothermal power. Accordingly, Turkey has started a major renewable energy and energy efficiency program.

The country aims to increase its clean energy share to 30 percent of its power supply by 2023 -- the 100th anniversary of the republic. With over $40 billion in investment expected in this area, foreign and local investors are expected to see major business development opportunities in solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and all elements of energy efficiency as Turkey has an ideal climate for wind and solar energy investments with an average of more than seven hours of sunshine a day while also bordering the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Black Sea.

Thank god at last, Germany is producing gigawatts of solar energy in the north of us. Our country is much more suitable for solar energy especially southern areas. But we are so desperate we are still running dirty thermic stations and polluting our own living areas.

We need millions and billions of dollars of investment in this area. I'ts much cleaner and much safer than nuclear. Even the india has one of world's biggest solar farms despite the nuclear capability.

We dont even have domestic solar panels.

Cooperation with Germany, China or India can significantly boost solar power generation in your country.

Turkish mindset... World leaving nuclear technology? Then I am going to open a nuclear santral in my country...

scumbag Turkish politicans...

Once we do have those capabilities we could do something similar to the German and massively subsidize solar power.

We don't even need nuclear power plants if we would use our natural capacities in geothermal and solar energy.

Edit: Before his fanboys screams about the number I know its not decided yet but first tender is going to be around 20 billion so for three santrals I gave the number 60 billion

Deno Nucleur santrals are needed stop being stupid , they will be very importantg

@Otto-Turk for what exactly?

Nuclear plants should be our last call. We aren't using our country's neatural resources, we will be buying nuclear fuel for nuclear plants. Solar energy is cheaper, safer, cleaner :)

Im not saying lets not use solar energy but nucleur will help alot , plus we will get more expertise and one day when we need 'THE BOMB' we will know more

turkey has a lot of know how for a Thermonuklear bomb.

I think this will be not a prob to get this bombs in a critical situation.

why hatin on Nuclear energy? it is better to use that than import massive loads of oil and gas to drive electricity etc...

and beside they have a long lifetime. it's not one time. solar energy is good, but Nuclear energy ain't bad.

a nuclear reactor doesn't pollute the athmosphere as much as people believe. and we will not spend money to import resources.

If we go nuclear we should use/develop a thorium reactor which is by far safer, probably cheaper (because thorium is everywhere) and has no waste disposal problem.

Nuclear power plants will give the ability for further research in Nuclear propulsion and what not. Nuclear power plants are a must; however, it doesn't mean that Turkey shouldn't invest in other areas for energy independence. In the end, Turkey can only do as much as it is allowed and nothing more.
