The Tata LPTA 1623 6x6 truck was developed as a private venture to meet a possible Indian Army requirement. For a long time Indian Army was obtaining Czech-designed Tatra trucks. However procurement of Tatras has been put on hold due to a bribery case and Indian Army was looking for a replacement. Tata Motors developed not only 8x8 version, but the whole family of heavy high mobility military trucks. There are 4x4, 8x8and even 12x12 versions. In 2015 Indian Army ordered over 1 200 units of Tata LPTA 1623 6x6 trucks. It was a single largest order awarded by the Indian Army for a local and private manufacturer.
Indian Army already operates a significant number of various trucks, produced by Tata Motors. However these are light and medium vehicles, rather than purpose-designed tactical vehicles.
This military truck has a payload capacity of over 10 000 kg. It can be used as logistic truck for troop/cargo carrying. Vehicle can be fitted with a hydraulic material handling crane for loading and unloading pallets, spares and other equipment. Also the Tata LPTA 1623 can be used as a special chassis for mounting various shelters, equipment and weapon systems. There are fuel and water tanker versions of this truck. Also there is a wrecker version, fitted with recovery hamper.
Vehicle has a modular cabin. It seems that it is interchangeable among the Tata range of high mobility trucks. Large cab of the LPTA 1623 accommodates driver and 4 passengers. There are two roof hatches for observation, firing and emergency exit. The cabin is tilted forward for engine access and maintenance.
The truck is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. This vehicle has good cross-country mobility and can go over all kinds of rough terrain. After preparation this military truck fords water obstacles up to 1.4 m deep.
