Task force to protect border crossings

Emergency response teams will be established on Turkey’s southern and eastern border crossings following a directive from Customs and Trade Minister Hayati Yazıcı to protect customs officials who are sometimes physically assaulted by smugglers.

Members of the emergency response teams, which will operate under the Directorate General of Customs Enforcement, will carry guns, automatic MP5 pistols, tear gas spray, handcuffs and truncheons. Some 48 customs officials were physically assaulted during the past one year at border crossings in eastern and southeastern Turkey while they were attempting to seize smuggled goods.

An emergency response team consisting of 29 personnel has already been sent to the Habur Customs Gate with Iraq, 28 personnel were sent to the Gürbulak Customs Gate with Iran, while 11 personnel were sent to the Esendere Customs Gate, also with Iran. A team consisting of seven personnel will also start their duty Monday at the Sarp Customs Gate with Georgia.

Such problems do not occur at customs gates on Turkey’s western borders, officials said, adding that emergency response teams would be deployed only at Turkey’s eastern and southeastern border crossings. The teams would only be tasked with maintaining the security of the customs area, officials said, adding that more teams would be deployed at the customs gates at Cilvegözü and Öncüpınar with Syria, as well as at Kapıköy with Iran in the coming days.

Team members are to receive four months of close combat and weapons training, according to officials, who also said the teams would respond to those who threatened security during customs procedures, after which time the suspects will be turned over to the judicial authorities.

Well, attacking customs people is really bad business, I think placing squads with rabid dogs to hunt down the perpetrators would be better.
