A Pakistani naval officer has been shot and injured in an attack in the port city of Karachi.

Police in Karachi say that the officer was travelling alone in his car when he was shot, and that they believe there may have been more than one attacker.

The incident is the second attack on a Shia naval officer this month.

Karachi is Pakistan's principal port and the main base for its navy but has also been plagued by years of ethnic and sectarian violence.

On 7 February, another Shia naval officer, Lt Commander Syed Asif Hussain Kazmi, was injured following an explosion in his car near the Karsaz naval base in Karachi. He had to have one leg amputated after the attack.

Pakistan's navy has been the target of a series of attacks claimed by al-Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban in the past, the BBC's M Ilyas Khan reports from Islamabad.

Those attacks were thought to be a response to the use of naval surveillance aircraft to identify and target Taliban hideouts in the northwest, and also the arrest of pro-Taliban elements within the navy.

However, these latest attacks seem to have a more sectarian dimension, our correspondent reports.

KARACHI: A Pakistan Navy officer was killed when gunmen opened fire at his car near gate 15 of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on Wednesday, Express News reported.

According to security sources, it was a targeted attack on Lieutenant Commander Azeem Haider, and all navy officers had been earlier informed of a possible attack.

The officer got three bullet injuries to his chest and was shifted to PNS Shifa Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

It was earlier reported that Lt Haider was investigating the PNS Mehran attack, but security sources denied the officer’s involvement in the investigation.

Targeted killings have been on the rise in Karachi at the same time when the Supreme Court is hearing a suo motu case on the law and order situation in the city.

Rangers have also been given additional powers to deal with the ongoing violence and to carry out security operations.

We should be careful in reaching conclusion because often in Karachi political parties are also involved which when murder some security force guy try to blame Taliban and other groups because their killing could lead to Army operation against these Political terrorists in Karachi

How can some group attack a naval officer and get away with it? The news is rather vague. Was he shot in daylight? Any witnesses? Hopefully he will make a speedy recovery.
