CHENNAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stand in support of Hindi, pushing for it to replace English as the preferred language of India's bureaucrats, is being met with stiff opposition from political leaders in Tamil Nadu

After DMK chief Karunanidhi’s displeasure at the dictum, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa voiced her anger saying that the directive to use Hindi as the social media language is against the spirit of Official Languages Act, 1963.

The central government had directed its employees and employees of central undertakings and banks to use Hindi or both Hindi and English on their official web pages in social media like Twitter, blogs, YouTube, Facebook and Google.

In a letter to Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa wrote that the dictum makes the use of Hindi compulsory and English optional and requested to modify the instructions to ensure that English is is used on social media too.

Jayalalithaa also stressed that the diktat to use of Hindi as the official language could cause a unrest in Tamil Nadu as the people of the state are very proud of and passionate about their linguistic heritage.

Modi's government has ordered its officials to use Hindi on social media accounts and in government letters.

Modi spoke in Hindi and used interpreters in meetings with South Asian leaders last month, and addressed the Bhutanese parliament in Hindi during his first official overseas trip last week.

Karunanidhi slammed India's home ministry for its social media diktat.

"No one can deny it's beginning to impose Hindi against one's wish. This would be seen as an attempt to treat non-Hindi speakers as second-class citizens," television channels quoted DMK chief Karunanidhi as saying.

In a statement, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said the official directive to government employees to give preference to the use of Hindi language in social media is contrary to an individual's wish and is the beginning of imposition of Hindi.

The push for greater use of Hindi by Modi has been read partly as a move to break from the anglophone elite of the dynastic Congress party, which he thrashed in parliamentary polls in April and May.

FARK SAKE.
@Bang Galore

Look at the original letter, it was ordered during the UPA rule and sent through BEFORE Rajnath Singh took office as MHA. In other words this controversy is entirely media generated.

The Indian media are truly terrible. The entire sector needs to be regulated.

What is the difference? Same effect. Not like this government is following religiously what the previous government did. Modi's own actions & that of Rajnath Singh have suggested they favour Hindi. That is all fine, there is no bar to using Hindi primarily either because of political reasons or because of not being comfortable in English. My point is simply that this has now unnecessarily ignited an almost dead issue with the blowback in terms of support that will be affected in those states/areas not favouring this move. Unnecessary.

Very few have debated or even understood what should be the main talking point. assume that a South Indian who has done most of his/her schooling either in english or the local language becomes an IAS officer & goes on to serve in his/her (non-Hindi) state (therefore conducting business either in English or the local language, not in Hindi). If such a officer is posted to the centre where the primary language is Hindi (not verbal alone , written too), obviously it will put him/her at a disadvantage and is essentially constituting a discriminatory practice giving advantage at the central level to a selective bunch of people alone.

We are no longer living in 60s, Tamil politicians won't be able to milk this issue now. If use of Hindi on social media is bad then use of English which is understood by less than 5% of India's population is even a worse choice.

of course when DMK is raising Stink , how can AIDMK can remain silence. Public Tamil demand !

for the first time since 1996 .. Dravidian parties are fining themselves irrelevant and unable to do arm-twisting of central govt .. their fav time pass. All this stink is being raised because of the same !!

Unnecessary move by Modi. Instead Modi should concentrate on development.

‘Use Hindi directive’ meant only for Hindi-speaking states, not being imposed on others: Modi govt

The NDA government at the Centre on Friday clarified that the decision was meant for only Hindi-speaking states and not others.

This comes after the Modi government was criticised by several parties such as DMK, AIADMK, Congress and Left.

Facing criticism over its ‘use Hindi directive’, the NDA government at the Centre on Friday clarified that the decision was meant for only Hindi-speaking states and not others. The government issued a statement saying the directive is not being imposed on non-Hindi-speaking states.

This comes after the Modi government was criticised by several parties such as DMK, AIADMK, Congress and Left. While Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and former finance minister P Chidambaram raised serious concerns, the CPI(M) urged the government to modify its policy.

Shooting off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa described the Home Ministry’s proposal as ‘against the letter and spirit’ of the Official Languages Act, 1963,” while pointing out that the ‘highly sensitive issue’ caused ‘disquiet’ to the people of Tamil Nadu ‘who are very proud of and passionate about their linguistic heritage’.

Karunanidhi, whose party had successfully led the anti-Hindi agitation in 1960s, had dubbed the move as a beginning of “imposition of Hindi.”

Chidambaram on the other hand slammed the decision by stating that ‘there will be a backlash in non-Hindi speaking states specially Tamil Nadu.’

A recent circular issued by the Director (official language) Avadesh Kumar Mishra, said, “All officers and employees who operate official accounts on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, Google, Youtube should use Hindi and English languages. Prominence should be given to Hindi.

Damage Control or is he a congenital Liar ?

The BJP on Friday sought to defend the government's move to promote Hindi, saying it seeks to bind the nation together and should not be construed as an "insult' to English.

"Hindi is the national language and is the heart of the country. Priority to Hindi cannot be (construed as) an insult to English. The government's initiative for according priority to Hindi and regional languages is a welcome step,' BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
