KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The Taliban captured the Kunduz-Khanabad highway after overrunning the Qala-i-Zal district of northern Kunduz province, officials said on Saturday.

Rabbani Rabbani, a provincial council member, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban attacked highway on Friday morning and took control of it.

He said the Kunduz-Takhar highway had also been blocked by the Taliban who captured security posts and inflicted casualties on security forces.

Rabbani demanded the government take a serious action for recapturing areas lost to the rebels as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Mahmmud Danish, the governor’s spokesman, said militants stormed the Kunduz-Takhar highway on Friday morning but they were pushed back and suffered heavy casualties.

Thousands of Afghans have fled fighting between Afghan forces and Taliban militants in the northeastern province of Kunduz since the group captured a key district following the launch of their spring offensive last month, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said on May 7.

The Taliban captured the Qala-i-Zal district, west of Kunduz city, on May 6.

The NRC said Afghans are also fleeing from the Khanabad district.

"Hundreds of Afghan families are desperately fleeing armed conflict in Kunduz Province," said Kate O'Rourke, the Afghanistan Country Director for the Norwegian Refugee Council.

"Many are accommodated with extended families elsewhere, but some have had to sleep in the open," O’Rourke added.

"All armed actors must respect International Humanitarian Law, avoiding civilian casualties and allowing fleeing civilians safe passage," she said.

Over the past 18 months, Taliban fighters have twice succeeded in seizing the town center of Kunduz for brief periods.

Afghan Taliban captured a district just outside the northern Afghan city of Kunduz on Saturday, officials said, pointing to renewed pickup in fighting after the insurgents announced their annual spring offensive last week.


Mahfouz Akbari, a police spokesman for eastern Afghanistan, said security forces had pulled out of Qala-i-Zal district, west of Kunduz city, on Saturday to avoid further civilian and military casualties after more than 24 hours of heavy fighting.


In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgents had taken police headquarters, the governor's compound and all security checkpoints. He said several police and soldiers had been killed and wounded.

Over the past 18 months, Taliban insurgents have twice succeeded in seizing the town center of Kunduz for brief periods and the latest fighting underscores warnings that Afghan forces face another grueling year of fighting.



"I am extremely worried. There are security forces everywhere," he said. "Everyone in my family is worried and if the situation gets worse, we'll have to leave."


According to U.S. estimates, government fighters control only around 60 percent of the country, with the rest either controlled or contested by the insurgents, who are seeking to reimpose Islamic law after their 2001 ouster.

Although the Taliban made a formal announcement of their spring offensive only last week, there has already been heavy fighting from the northern province of Badakhshan to the Taliban heartlands of Helmand and Kandahar in the south.


There have also been several operations against Islamic State militants in the eastern province of Nangarhar, which have also involved U.S. special forces and air strikes.

Clashes Ongoing Close to Kunduz City
Clashes are ongoing in the Charkhab area of the city, which comes a day after Qala-e-Zal fell to the Taliban on Saturday morning.

Heavy clashes are ongoing in parts of northern Kunduz province including the Charkhab area of the city, local officials confirmed Sunday.

This comes after Qala-e-Zal district of the province collapsed to the Taliban on Saturday morning after two days of heavy clashes between the insurgent group and security forces.

The district collapsed after the insurgents carried out a group attack on Aqtepa in Qala-e-Zal, according to officials.

Sayed Mahmoud Danish, a spokesman for the provincial governor confirmed that heavy clashes are ongoing in Charkhab, on the outskirts of Kunduz city, adding that “the security forces retreated from Qala-e-Zal but clashes are ongoing around the district.”

“The security forces have surrounded the district from different directions,” he said.

Charkhab is a key area which links Kunduz city with Khan Abad district and northern Takhar provinces.

In the meantime, Safiullah Amiri, a member of the provincial council, has warned “we will close our office in the province due to insecurity.”

The clashes started four days ago in Khan Abad and are still ongoing, officials said.

A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid claimed early Sunday that they attacked security forces check posts and took control of one of the check posts.

But the local security forces have not yet confirmed this.

Officials have also not provided details about casualties among either security forces or the Taliban.

Residents are however concerned and said insurgents have increased their attacks in the province in the past few days and are posing security risks along the highways connecting Kunduz city, Khan Abad and Takhar province.

In the past two years, Kunduz city has twice fallen to the Taliban.

Late last month, the Taliban announced the launch of its spring offensive and immediately increased attacks around the country – especially in the northern parts of Afghanistan.




Situation growing very serious as they are on the banks of kunduz city. The province is in grave threat. I still can't believe that the afghan army is so incompetent that qala e zal. The district of qala e zal is 90% Turkmen. That means that the Taliban can no longer just be called a pashtun movement. Their presence in kubduz province is massive.

Quite frankly kunduz is in deep trouble. Its border districts are taken and khanabad highway has been captured. The province is standing on a surrounded capital and if this time kunduz falls then the province falls.

Americans wont continue this cycle for long, they are masters at diplomacy n economics, thier biggest strength is knowing when they are beat, they are already showing signs of abandoning their puppet kabul regime by changing their policy towards taliban n recognizing thier importance as a political group, they will very soon leave this shameless northern alliance govt fot the taliban to chew up, than they will extend a hand of friendship to the taliban by recognizing their govt, after that they will start dimplomatic relations withthem closely folowed by use of econimic etc as pressure tactics to achieve their limited objectives in afghanistan, this decade long war has turned taliban from rag tag militia to a highly specilized force with think tanks who have an understanding hoe geopolitics and how the world works, its not the same rigid group it was a decade ago, in short gentlemen, ISI won against cia/raw, we won...
