This was quite a sad read.
It is clear the Chinese don't understand how democracy works.
Australia is a little country in terms of population - so they are pushing it around. They would dare not try this in the US.

SYDNEY, Australia — During her second week waitressing at a barbecue restaurant in Sydney, a customer asked Yating Yang if she was Chinese. “No, I’m Taiwanese,” she said.

Her boss, who was from mainland China, never gave her another shift.

Man-Tzu Tuan said her loyalty test came even sooner: on her first day at a hot pot restaurant in a comfortable Sydney suburb. “Is Taiwan part of China?” her manager asked in Mandarin over a walkie talkie. “No, definitely not,” she said.

A half-hour later, she was fired.

China’s assertiveness has already set off alarms in Australia, with officials warning that Beijing has been meddling in Australian politics more than the public realizes. But the experiences of Ms. Yang and Ms. Tuan — along with many others — reveal how Chinese nationalism is also affecting private enterprise and, in some cases, leading to accusations of discrimination.

Australia’s fair work laws make clear that an employer cannot discriminate against an employee or prospective employee because of the person’s “political opinion, national extraction or social origin.” But experts and Taiwanese workers say that is exactly what many Chinese business owners are doing, with few repercussions.

Why should Chinese care about how democracy works? And since when there are democracy in the workplace? Is your boss elected by the staff?

"But what about the First Amendment, you ask. I have free speech rights, don’t I? The answer is no. You absolutely do not have the right to free speech at work unless you work for the government (and even then, not as much as you might think). The Bill of Rights only applies to government action. It sets out what our founders decided the government couldn’t do to citizens. It does not apply to what corporations can do to its citizens."

There's no such thing as a Taiwanese citizen because there's no country called "Taiwan." This is a very simple point, please make an effort to understand it.

Crimea River. It's what you wish India was strong enough to do. Jealous?
And the day will come when China pushes the US around as well, I assure you.

Because in democracies, you can't be fired for your political beliefs nor can your employer thrust his beliefs on you. I realize the case might be different in Communist nations but in civilized societies that's not how it works.

Well, officially the name is Republic of China. Of course there is a Taiwan - countries don't recognize it but that doesn't mean it does not exist. Many countries don't recognize Israel either. Same thing.

India strong enough to do what? We don't have Taiwanese citizens here except tourists. Lots of Chinese refugees but they happy to be here - and cause no problems.

I suggest you read it as well.

1. It is an opinion piece
2. It has nothing to do with a foreign Government

And this is about Australia - which expressly forbids it.

Who said "they would dare not try this in the US"? This is about the boss not liking what he/she hears, and yes you can get fired for that. Good luck with the litigation. I know in the US plenty of people have been fired over PC incorrectness.

What a frivolous nonsense! People don't like each other for whatever reasons. Even self-righteous Googlers ostracize and force out political conservatives. Australian politicians are discriminating Chinese for their political options all the time and now a waitress not having another shift in a Chinese restaurant is a big news?! Give me a break.

Taiwan is vestige of failed nation building attributed to CPC's perversion with communism.

Seemingly communism was more important than unity of nation for CPC

Leaving China in the class of nations like Georgia and Ukraine i.e nations with renegade provinces though accepted by most of their world as territory of host nation but inability to exercise any control.

This has led to them turning having perceived different nation identities.

And this thought process is not limited to Taiwanese , but Hong Kongers as well. Who thinks they are better off being a British colony than being part of China.

We only discriminate Indians.
Doubt that

So if a US employer fire a Chinese employee because of his/her ethnicity, you would not call it frivolous.

.
Then her boss was wrong in terminating her employment. He, in his realm of the restaurant, made her being Taiwanese important. You should direct that to him.
By expressing support for an independent Taiwan, she exposed and marked herself as a separatist. China does not tolerate separatism or sedition of any kind. You see, in this, China's just like the America you love so dearly:
Nobody secedes from the Union.

Thing is... they're weak. And their bygone masters are also weak. China is strong - and what the weak want is irrelevant to the strong. You know who's also weak? India. That's why what India wants the Maldives to do doesn't matter - because China is strong and supports President Yameen.

Except a New Yorker do not fire a Kentuckian or an Alabamian. Did the Taiwanese woman did any damages to the Chinese business?
