They were surprised/shocked only because of the pervasive bias and misinformation that gave them the misconception of China in the Taiwanese medias. And many media in Taiwan are controlled or partially controlled by Japanese interest groups.

It's likely in the first-tier cities.

When I was Chengdu 2 years ago my tour guide told me the average pay of the locals is around 3-4K RMB, so I was surprised that food prices are similar to Singapore. I'm even more surprised to see Starbucks full, when a cup of coffee costs 30-40+ RMB IIRC.

The first-tier cities are most likely more expensive. I read that Beijing's average property prices have hit 60K RMB per square meter. That's really insane. You work one year just to buy 1 or 2 square meter?
