Ma Ying-jeou and Xi Jinping will hold an historic meeting on November 7 in Singapore

Taiwan and China’s Presidents Will Meet for the First Time | The Diplomat

Meh meeting could be cancelled, don't expect to much.

His party is losing support and the DPP is likely to win the next election, I expect Xi to take a more hard line policy including having the remaining countries that recognize the ROC to shift their embassies like Gambia did, and speeding up military modernization related to Taipei.

.
Hahaha, that's it. DPP initiatively will to cooperate with American partys, and KMT is someties hesitate to cooperate with CCP. The poor KMT has gradually lost all its missions, goals. I don't know KMT's exist in Taiwan is for what.

.
Always prepare for the worst outcome when it comes to dealing with Taiwan. Make the sea area around Taiwan completely under PLA Navy's control as soon as possible before the DPP is elected into power.

CHina can just make Taiwan economy suffer if they try to be funny. The very reason DPP loses support initially is the stagnant and slowing of its economy. End of the day, Taiwanese are more concern abt rice bowl on the table.

No,no,no matter how the Taiwan economic suffers, it's been advanced economy. Most people can't feel directly the economic suffers. It is not some Africa countries which is sometimes as bad as lacking food. Economic boycott can't influence Taiwan. End of the discussion.

Xi-Ma meeting 'milestone in cross-Strait relations'
November 4, 2015

Chinese President Xi Jinping's scheduled meeting with Taiwan's leader Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore on Saturday is a milestone in the development of cross-Strait relations, a mainland Taiwan affairs official said Wednesday.

The meeting will mark a start of direct exchange and communication between leaders of the mainland and Taiwan, said Zhang Zhijun, head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

The meeting comes at an important time for the cross-Strait relations. As people on the two sides hope the relations remain peaceful and stable and bring greater welfare to the people, the meeting between the two leaders will be a significant move that complies with the people's wish and the trend of the time, Zhang said

The meeting will lift the interaction between the two sides to a new level and will create more space for the development of cross-Strait relations, he said.

The move will promote communication and mutual trust between the two sides, help manage conflicts and divergences, consolidate common political foundation and promote peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, he said.

It will help safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the region, he added. "I believe the meeting will gain wide support from all walks of life across the Strait and the international community."

With Chinese presence in South China Sea, South Asian will not dare to do any more Chinese Massacre. Since the West came to East Asia, there had been at least 20 major massacres against Chinese by south asian, stirred by the west. There are much more anti-China movements. The latest record was by Vietnam in 2014.

China leader meeting Taiwan Leader in Singapore, shows a strong to the signal for the solidarity of Chinese to those anti-China South Asian and their West lords. A unification of 1.4 billion mainland Chinese, 23 million of Taiwan Chinese, 40 million Chinese in ASEAN, will be the most important for to protect peace and stability in Asia. and prevent any external hostile interference.

Chinese military presence will guarantee China to suppress any Chinese Massacre in ASEAN. One day it will also suppress any anti-China movement.

Whole world applauds Xi-Ma cross-straits meeting
Published: 2015-11-4 14:17:30

Mainland authorities announced early Wednesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou will meet in Singapore on Saturday to exchanges views on the peaceful development across the Straits. The Xi-Ma meeting is a major breakthrough of the relations between Taiwan and the mainland. It will exert a positive influence on the island's future policy toward the mainland and set a firm foundation for way the world perceives this relationship.

Since the Wang-Koo meeting in 1993, the level of meetings between leaders from the two sides has been getting higher, but no breakthrough has formed yet, mainly because it is difficult to define their identities and titles. Taiwan has hoped to identify its leaders as "president," to which the mainland will not agree. This is not only a matter of identity, but a matter of the essence of mainland-Taiwan relations.

Zhang Zhijun, head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, revealed that Xi and Ma will meet as the "leaders" of both sides. This is a result of negotiation in line with the one-China principle when the political differences between the two sides have not been solved.

Xi and Ma call each other "Mister." This will be a unique phenomenon in top meetings.

Although such practical arrangement has temporarily shelved the problem, it will create a space for both sides to resolve the problem in future. The Taiwan question will generally develop into three directions - maintaining the status quo, stepping into unification, or realizing the so-called "Taiwan Independence."

It is impossible for the cross-Straits relationship to maintain exactly the "status quo." It, under influence from various forces, is changing all the time. "Taiwan independence" has been driven by only interior extreme forces. Their current running rampant is a bubble in the course of history. The counter thrusts include the mainland's increasingly powerful clout and the positive mainstream forces from Taiwan itself. The world is also anticipating closer cross-Straits ties. These forces are shaping the big picture of closer relations between both sides.

Xi's political appeal has impressed both sides of the straits and the whole world. The meeting, which has been long anticipated, has finally been realized in Xi's first-term in office. His appeal is essential for taking steps to realize great rejuvenation of Chinese nation.

We should give Ma warm applause for his willingness to move toward the meeting. With seven months left in office, the 1992 Consensus is well being upheld, and the cross-Straits cooperation is becoming prosperous. Although Ma has become somewhat controversial due to his performance on Taiwan's internal governance, still, positive factors of cross-Straits ties are highly likely to have a longer influence on Taiwan's future path than Ma's term, which will outweigh the complicated politics on the island.

The pan-green camp in Taiwan has made immediate objections to the upcoming meeting between Xi and Ma, hoping to take public opinion into their control. However, they should be aware that the historical meeting is supported by the whole world, including the US, and they are displaying jiggery-pokery from a small circle. Such extremism won't last for long in the big global trend. It will be bound to be stigmatized.

The Xi-Ma meeting is making Chinese worldwide excited. The whole of international society is also very interested in seeing the two sides taking a pragmatic step forward. Applause will break out all over the globe. It will be a victory of peace, a victory of rationality.

Singapore like to play host to cross-straits issue, last major meeting was held there decades ago.
This is also very important for Singapore on both security and economy. Singapore reminds its neighbors that it is part of Greater China. Singapore is the de facto economic capital for nearly 40 million Chinese in ASEAN. Many overseas Chinese in ASEAN park their wealth over there for safety. This is one important reason that Singapore is way much richer than its neighbors.

Singapore do have a close but "low-key" relationship with China. Their neighbors, however, are more worried about the US warships docked at Singapore port. The tiny city-state is a master of diplomacy-strategy game.

Singapore has to be low key because China can guarantee its safety. But this will only be realized until China solves Taiwan and SCS issue. Before that, it relies on United States for its safety. It is a city smaller than Israel and surrounded by more than 200 millions of Muslims. To guarantee its safety, it needs strong US presence or China presence in ASEAN.

Besides the security calculations, Singapore is very friendly to China. It adopted simplified Chinese very quickly, even though Hong Kong and Taiwan still use Traditional Chinese now. It also openly introduce naturalization of Chinese to guarantee the Chinese domination. If China can unify Taiwan, China will definitely put the security of overseas Chinese in South Asia into one priority. At that time, you will see rapid improvement of China-Singapore security cooperation. You have to tolerate low key China-Singapore security relation because China is not strong enough.

Singapore-China ties: 7 things to know about 25 years of diplomatic relations

On Friday (Nov 6), President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan will make their first state visit to Singapore.

In many ways, the ties between Singapore, a city-state of 5.6 million, and China, a behemoth with 1.4 billion people, have been unique.

Here are seven things about the two countries' relationship.

1. Handshake seals the deal

Singapore and China established diplomatic relations on Oct 3, 1990 at the United Nations complex in New York.

Then Foreign Minister Wong Kan Seng and his then Chinese counterpart Qian Qichen signed a short communique and shook hands in a simple ceremony.

The signing took just two minutes.

Mr Wong said then that the agreement would simply formalise existing relations between Singapore and China, which were already warm.

2. Why did it take so long?

The ceremony took place 14 years after former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's first visit to China in 1976.

With its majority Chinese population, Singapore had to be sensitive to the perception of its neighbours.

To avoid being labelled a "third China", Singapore wanted to be the last of the original five Asean nations to normalise diplomatic relations with China before it did so. Malaysia was the first to do so in 1974, and Philippines and Thailand followed in 1975.

Indonesia, in particular, had a difficult relationship with China. Ties were severed in 1967 after Jakarta accused Beijing of complicity in an abortive communist coup attempt.

Indonesia resumed formal relations with China in August 1990, after Beijing pledged not to interfere in Indonesia's internal affairs.

3. Back in the 1970s

Way before 1990, the friendship between the late Mr Lee and China patriarch Deng Xiaoping set the tone for Singapore-China ties.

Mr Lee visited China in 1976 where he met Chinese leader, Chairman Mao Zedong. Mao died later that year.

Mr Lee was also the first foreign leader to see the terracotta warriors, discovered two years earlier, in northern Shaanxi province.

Two years later, Mr Deng came to Singapore and Singapore's governance model strengthened his resolve to open up China.

Mr Lee called the diminutive Chinese leader "a giant among men", while Mr Deng had Singapore on his mind when he designed his economic reforms.

When Mr Deng made his famous "southern tour" to spur futher economic reform in 1992, he said: "Singapore's social order is rather good. Its leaders exercise strict management. We should learn from their experience, and we should do a better job than they do."

4. Sending ambassadors

A year after ties were formalised, Singapore sent its first ambassador to China. Mr Cheng Tong Fatt was in China for seven years. Before becoming a diplomat, he was permanent secretary of the Ministry of Culture.

The respective trade representatives' offices, set up in September and October 1981, were upgraded to embassies.

Diplomat Zhang Qing was China's first Ambassador to Singapore.

5. We mean business

China is now Singapore's largest trade partner, with two-way trade reaching S$121.5 billion last year. In January 2014, Singapore became China's largest foreign investor for the first time with US$7.3 billion worth of investments in 2013.

6. Joint projects

Economic ties between Singapore have always been governed by pragmatism. Trade between Singapore and China did not stop even at the height of the Cold War.

By 1979, Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Deng had signed a trade agreement and trade representative offices were set up in 1981 to strengthen economic links between the two countries.

Singapore firms have multiple joint development projects with China including the Guangzhou Knowledge City, the Jilin Food Zone, the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park and the Nanjing Eco High-Tech Island.

There are two state-led projects. The Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), launched in 1994, was the flagship government-level project.

The park, based on Singapore's Jurong industrial estates, was built to attract foreign investors into Suzhou. It suffered losses in the initial years as Suzhou officials promoted a rival industrial park owned by the municipal government.

Singapore cut its stake in the SIP from 65 per cent to 35 per cent in 2001, and it began making money that same year.

The second joint venture was the Tianjin Eco-City, which broke ground in 2008. The project, started to create a sustainable model for urban living, was home to some 30,000 residents as of August 2015.

It suffered superficial damage to its buildings during deadly explosions at a chemical warehouse 16km away in August.

Xi's visit on Friday may see Singapore and China announce a third government-to-government project in western China.

7. Panda diplomacy

Pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia created a stir when they arrived in Singapore in 2012. They are on a 10-year loan from China. The loan, announced in 2009, was to mark 20 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

It is a city smaller than Israel and surrounded by more than 200 millions of Muslims. To guarantee its safety, it needs strong US presence or China presence in ASEAN.

At that time, you will see rapid improvement of China-Singapore security cooperation. You have to tolerate low key China-Singapore security relation because China is not strong enough.

Singapore has always been a rather prudent actor in ASEAN with respect to relations with China. It is probably the best student of China when it comes to pragmatism.
