What's new

Tables turned, 1,800 academics relocated to China in 2020, China beat US and became the world’s most attractive destination for scientists

I'm not debating that. I know there is 5+ years. So how is that supposedly going to shuffle that 600,000 over the last 20.

Are you going to say that nobody has applied for citizenship in the last 5 years and all of the current ones are actually from a huge pileup from before 2017 and when that stack is fullfilled the count is going to drop from the 10's of thousands to maybe just thousands.

Any particular reason you think 2017 is the big cutoff?

Let's look at some numbers from a website (I supposedly never link from)

https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/f...2019/yearbook_immigration_statistics_2019.pdf
PERSONS OBTAINING LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENT STATUS BY REGION AND SELECTED COUNTRY OF LAST RESIDENCE: FISCAL YEARS 1820 TO 2019 –

China
2010 67,634
2011 83,603
2012 78,184
2013 68,410
2014 72,492
2015 70,977
2016 77,658
2017 66,479
2018 61,848
2019 60,029

So yes i see a spike in 2011 and 2016 and 2019 is low.
I would expect with Covid the numbers for 2020 and 2021 will be lower.
2017: Trump takes office. My prediction was that immigration numbers after 2017 will decline (due to reduced acceptance for immigrants) and so will naturalization numbers for the corresponding later years i.e. at least 5 years later (as people become more insecure about their future in the US).

My original assertion was regarding the wait times, and that was proven correct by USCIS statistics and immigration lawyer guides.

. . .
Most Chinese immigrants to US are from FUJian rural regions with very limited education, also very limited land supply cause that is a very mountainous region, and they have a tradition of moving overseas, almost all of them have some relatives living in foreign countries, they make money in foreign countries and sent the money back to build good homes in their home region, that's why we see many 华侨村, Overseas Chinese villages, in rural Fujian mountainous villages.
As for some Chinese scientists who live in US, US never fully trust them, it's fair to say there is a reason for this untrust, overseas Chinese always have very strong ties with China, be it for business people or scientists, they are like a Chinese 5th column in US, contributing enormously to China's fast development in economy and rapid progress in science and technology.
Chinese immigrants in US, either poor farmers or highly educated scientists, benefits way more to China than to US.

LOL! So where did you pull this information from?

Almost every person I have met has had a degree..most of them advanced.
Many from Shanghai and the Beijing area. They live in nice houses in the suburbs.

If you think some uneducated person is going to be sending money back to China then I guess the stereotype of the 24 hour slave in the basement Chinese laundry is true in your eyes. You aren't going to get a decent job in a US company without a degree. You'll be living a life of not much extra money.

Hopefully you wont get a successful job of collecting cans in the US streets.

"these arrivals were mostly unskilled, agricultural workers. "

Ask every first and second generation Chinese immigrants in US, they all know this.

For unskilled workers and peasents, they still make more money in US than in China, no one denied it.

It also says these were mostly illegal immigrants. So yes these are the stereotypical Chinese seen in Hollywood movies who don't speak english and live their entire lives within US Chinatowns as cooks and or in basement Chinese Laundries excluded from being represented in corporate America.

We welcome global scientists, but in some other sectors, things have gone kind of to a very weird level, too many naturalized foreign born Chinese athletes prompted massive outcry across the Chinese social media, for example, can we still call this a Chinese team?

"China's men's hockey squad has with a 25-man roster that includes just six homegrown nationals, the remaining players coming from Canada (11), United States (7) and Russia (1)."

Well, most European track and field teams are all Black/African. You gotta do what you gotta do to win gold.

Could be, but how do you explain the sharp drop of the talents relocating to US and UK? Do you imply that most of the world top talents are all Chinese origin?

Read any US research paper and I will guarantee you, at least 30-40% of the names are Chinese.

The Chinese race has among the world's highest IQs and now that China has fully industrialized, it has by far the most massive pool of high quality scientific/technological talent, regardless of whether these people are in China or in the West. If China can get most of the ethnic Chinese scientists back to China, then it will have a huge advantage.

I know some of them when I was in New York, after several years they all became US citizens, the only trouble they had was the English words they had to remember for their citizenship oath taking.

.
how many papers did they publish in the Worlds most reusable journals ?
I think the word you are looking for may be "reputable journal" not "reusable journal".

Its obvious what you are trying to imply here just to be condescending and contrarian, but cant say because you are both too lazy and unable to substantiate that point with any quantifiable indicators. But dont think you can get away with this when you are carrying this Think Tank Analyst title, for who knows what reason, yet constantly tarnish the reputation of this board with this nonstop infantile jingoistic rambling.

What are "reusable" journals?
How many papers do they need to publish?
Which fields of research count?
What counts as their papers?
Are third party coauthors, their origin, their educational background and the location of associated research facilities somehow invalidating the claim on a paper as theirs?
Are you going to move your goalpost to other arbitrary and unsubstantiated assertions about quality, novelity or importance of their research when the number of publications in reputable, or whatever reusable journals are, dont fit what you are trying to imply?

On a site note, its easy to sneer at papers as a keyboard warrior, but how many journals and papers did you actually even read in your life?

yeah, if they were legal and actually had documents to file.

If not when they get older some end up like this since they get no retirement benefits. Unfortunately this is a very common sight.

New York China town is like a rural small town in the 1980's in China, so are the people. In terms of infrastructure, US never develops. what was like 50 years ago, still is today.
Want to see what could change in China in 30 years time, check out Shenzhen

LOL! No, you mean China has a long long long history of never developing.

It's like the neighbor who bought a brand new car after using a rickety bicycle for 60 years chastising his neighbors for having only 3 year old cars.
