Dude, I would have supported this uprising whole heartedly if it had happened before Iraq Invasion or the Egypt Uprising as I hate dictators as much as the next person.... but after seeing how Christians became targets of Islamists in both Iraq and Egypt after the regime change I have my doubts about the true intentions of these Syrian rebels. Even now ominous signals are coming from the rebel camp about the fate of Christians if they take over.
True, there was some violence against Iraqi Christians. Egypt is not too bad, but they need to improve for sure.
Ever seen how the Iraqi Shias slaughtered? Even after they were killed during bomb blasts, their funerals were bombed again to kill their families and friends. Now that's hardcore terrorism. Or plain evil perhaps?
I'm sure Iraq would be prosperous and stable for the years to come. Iraqis are generally educated and they have a lot of resources. Pity that Iraq was once the most developed nation in the Arab world back in the pre-Gulf War Saddam days.
The bottom line is that Assad's use of force is only going to increase sectarian tensions, I can guarantee that. What can't be guaranteed is Assad holding on to power for long. I don't know what would happen afterwards.
And as far as the Syrian rebels are concerned, we don't even know who or what they are. I do not believe everything I hear on the media, especially considering that journalists from foreign news networks cannot go there.
They could be mindless extremists, or good folks simply fighting for their rights. And if memory serves me, this fighting started after some protesters were attacked by government soldiers.
Let's be frank, Syria's economy hasn't exactly lived up to its potential under Assad's rule. They have resources, low population and a great historical and cultural heritage. Assad is doing something wrong for sure.
