People demonstrated in the city of Sylhet on Tuesday against any move of the Awami League led government to hand over 150 acres of Bangladesh territory at Padua border at Goainghant upazila to India.

Hundreds of socio-political activists joined a human chain in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in the city under the banner of ‘Amra Jaintabashi’ in protest against any such move.

At a rally held later, the protesters said there was an unholy move to give up the land in the possession of Bangladesh.

They said that the interests of the nation and the citizens are not safe in the hands of this government pursuing a weak-kneed foreign policy.

They said that a government that pursues such weak kneed foreign policy can do anything to satisfy its foreign mentors.

They said that was no reason to give up more than 150 acres of disputed territory in the possession of Bangladesh at the Padua border under Goainghat upazila in Sylhet.

Chaired by Amra Jaintabasi president Bashir Ahmad, the rally was addressed by, among others, former MP and district BNP vice-president Dildar Hosen Selim, the party leader Mahbubur Rab Chowdhury Faysal, Arif Iqbal Nehal, advocate Kamal Ahmad, Al-Aslam Mumin and Durniti Muktakaran Forum president Nasir Uddin.

Only if they knew that Bangladesh is actually gaining land under this land swapping deal :disagree:

This happened during the Indian FM's visit to Dhaka? Interesting. Why they want to hand over the territory to India? What's in it for them? Anyone care to elaborate?

You think they didn't know that? This happens when you have too many jobless people in your country.

What bloody land swap? What is India swapping for the Padua land?

India has enclaves within Bangladesh about 17,000 acres and Bangladesh has enclaves within India, bout 7000 acre. So overall Bangladesh is gaining about 10,000 acres.

There is now talk that a land swap might be sealed when India’s prime minister Manmohan Singh visits Bangladesh later this year. If it goes ahead, India stands to lose just over 4,000 hectares of its territory, or about 40 square kilometres. It has 111 enclaves of land within Bangladesh—nearly 70 square kilometres. Bangladesh has 51 enclaves of its own, comprising 28 square kilometres surrounded by India. The transfer proposed would simplify the messy boundary immeasurably—and entail something like a 10,000-acre net loss for India.

The funny part is that they are protesting over what 150 acres of land? Seriously I personally have ten times more land than that :cheesy:

But then again this is probably a case of some politician riling up illiterate people, who don't know much about the over all land swap deal. Saddest part is that some Bangladeshis on the internet are also getting riled up, they are illiterates who can read and write and even use the interwebs. They can keep sticking their head in sand for all India cares:bunny:.

Dhaka, Delhi move to swap enclaves

These are all irrelevant points. What land is India specifically swapping for the land in Padua? There is no mention of a land swap in the article. If you have better and specific information lets hear it but referring to irrelevant articles on land swap is of no use. I want to know the specifics of this particular deal.

No the point is that, that no one seems to be doing hartal about that 10,000 acres of land that Bangladesh will gain, but people are chuking a fit over 150 acres of land, which is probably needed for border fence. Border fencing is going to be completed no matter what. Bangladeshis can go source their phensydyl from somewhere else.

If bangladesh is giving up 150 acres of land for the border fence ,how much land is india giving up for the border fence???

If there is specific land swap for padua then you wont get extra 10000 acres, will you?
The land swap deal is for removing enclaves, probably BD has more enclaves hence net gainer of land.
Now you seem to claim so much inside knowledge, why dont you investigate and enlighten us as to what is going on there.

And yes, expect similar opposition from Indian side, because people are attached to their land.

We gotta wait till more information comes out before we draw a conclusion. Till then this matter should be kept to rest.

Does anyone care how much acres do you posses?
Few months ago there was a similar
incident in Assam or tripura where Indian
villagers protested against this land swap deal,
now if I follow your logic doesn't that make your
nation full of illiterates?
They have a right to protest and they are
practicing it, nothing unusual.

You guys are talking as if "O great India will donate 10,000 acres of her precious land to BDeshis"
but you do know we are also giving up 7000 acres. Percentage wise that is

0.02% from Bangladesh.

0.001% from india.

Wonderful isn't it.......playing the hypocrisy game 24/7.

.
^^^Me have a feeling that this land swapping deal can potentially get out of hand.

.
Yeah, if something goes wrong as usual we might end up losing 7000 acres for no good reason.
