Arent you guys supposed to check for this kind of stuff before you even consider giving them citizenship? This should be the actual issue here...not a stupid handshake!

Considering that there is nothing in the core text of the religion that has ANY indication on when and when not to shake hands and greet, I see no reason why these folks should not be sent to their favourite places like ISIS land or Saudi.

Interesting read.

In Western culture, etiquette (apparently) prescribes that a man waits for a woman to offer her hand first. If she does, then you shake it just as you’d shake a man’s.
http://www.gq.com/story/women-hand-shaking

That's definitely not a hard and fast rule though, no one will look at you strangely if you offer to shake a woman's hand first (though it is a bit too formal in more casual settings).

Unfortunately, Western etiquette does not specifically speak to the situation where a male refuses to shake with a woman, as far as I can tell. So, 'our ' etiquette' may actually be harder for male muslims to deal with, than it is for women.

Yea, it is not only extremely rude to refuse to shake a person's offered hand, it's just sexist if its because she is a woman, well, unless she has a cold or is otherwise sick of course.

The handshake was first done to show that you were not holding any weapons. Its archaic, but (to any non-westerners reading this) think about what refusing a handshake means in this case.

I would think explaining and clarifying is a good route to take, though it may still leave the person who was expecting a shake but got a refusal to feel like there is something wrong.

See this example: http://translationtimes.blogspot.nl/2014/02/business-etiquette-not-shaking-hands.html

Some feel it is almost the wordt social faux pas to refuse a handshake, short of slapping someone in the face. One should realize that.

In Japan, ignoring a greeting (bow), is similar to refusing to shake hands in Europe.

I don't think it is an issue for government to make rules on, though, even if I do also feel that it may hamper social integration in a new home country.

The issue applies for orthodox Jews and orthodox Hindu's too, by the way.

I know, it is 'old school' etiquette. But I'm looking for openings.

Yes , don't see why shaking anyone's hand has anything to do with anything

Germs are transmitted by hand shake

Well, how would you control for something like that without a pervasive secret surveillance programme?

I'd say it's easy to get through asylum if you present your case, have no recorded history of connections to extremism etc etc....what happens after that is an open question....how one developes as a person, environment influence etc etc...

In any case, their citizenship procedure has been put on halt. They are in Switzerland because of the asylum granted to their father and the repatriation rights that allow families to apply automatically almost...ie they get waived through.

You need to build a wall on the German and Italian borders ASAP.

What if the hands were cold , he could have refused hand shake if the other person's hand was too cold quite uncomfortable :cheesy:

scary that in Sweden these lovely chaps
In a democracy all sorts end up in positions of power. However the system is functioning underlined by the fact that they were removed. There has to some common sense. Muslim's (others) have to take some steps to fit in. I find open societies don't ask much. To make some changes is a obligation to societies that have taken you in. So with this in mind I find myself on the side of the Swiss here.

However before the Anti Muslim brigade takes off there are more examples of succesful Muslim's who have made effort to integrate. Examples are Hadia Tajik ( third right) a Norwegian minister of Pakistani extraction.

Its the right decision, if you cant live like the locals then you dont deserve the citizenship.

People are fed up with EU.

A poll by ORF radio in October 2008 reported that about half of the population of Vorarlberg would be in favour of joining Switzerland.

In Como, an online poll in June 2010 by the La Provincia di Como newspaper found 74% of 2,500 respondents in favor of accession to Switzerland, which the local regionalist party Lega Lombarda has long been advocating.

Another online poll by the South German Südkurier newspaper found that almost 70% of respondents replied "yes, the Swiss are closer to us in outlook" to a question whether the state of Baden-Württemberg should join Switzerland. The paper noted that seldom had a topic generated so much activity by its readership.

The Lombard eco-nationalist party Domà Nunch replied to Baettig's motion proposing an integration between Switzerland and the Italian border-area of Insubria in order to join into a new Confederation.

In Sardinia, the Associazione no-profit Sardegna Canton Marittimo was formed in April 2014 with the aim of advocating Sardinia's secession from Italy and becoming a "maritime canton" of Switzerland.

Die Welt in June 2014 based on an OECD study published an article arguing that Southern Germany is more similar to Switzerland than to Northern or Eastern Germany. In the wake of the article, there were once again reports on high levels of support for accession to Switzerland in Southern Germany. Schwäbische Zeitung reported 86% of participants in an online survey expressing approval.

Also in 2014, there were reports of a popular movement in South Tyrol to join Switzerland. The 6th "Global Forum Südtirol" held in Bolzano was dedicated to the question.

As possible candidates for accession, the motion named Alsace (FR), Aosta (IT), Jura (FR), Vorarlberg (AT), Ain (FR), Savoie (FR), Baden-Württemberg (DE), Varese (IT), Como (IT) "and others".
