ISLAMABAD: Pakistani ambassador to Germany, Dr Mohammad Faisal, said on Tuesday he had met Dieter Mettke from the multinational IKEA conglomerate who was en route to Pakistan to start IKEA operations there.
IKEA is a multinational conglomerate that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories. Founded in Sweden in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA is one of the world's largest furniture retailer since 2008.
“Met Dieter Mettke @IKEA_Deutchland. He is going to #Pakistan to be Incharge of #ikea operations,” Ambassador Faisal said on Twitter. “We look forward to #ikea opening up stores in major cities of #Pakistan.”

IKEA started its Asia push in the early 2000s and opened its first store in India in 2018.
The group has already taken its huge out-of-town stores packed with modern Scandinavian style to more than two dozen markets, with the product and experience instantly recognizable across them all.
In developed markets, IKEA is positioned as a low-priced mass-market brand, but in emerging markets where low prices are the norm, it targets a growing middle class that aspires to international lifestyle products.
Good news. Swedish Giant coming to Pakistan

I don't even understand how this benefits Pakistan in the slightest.

It's like McDonald's or KFC opening up chains in Pakistan.

As far as I can tell they're going to open up retail outlets, they'll earn revenues from within the country while Pakistan loses valuable foreign exchange and local manufacturers lose market share.

Are they going to manufacture in Pakistan for export? No, not as far as I can tell.

Where is the furniture manufactured? China, Vietnam, etc...

Your childish assumptions are hilarious I must say.

As for the original post. It's good brands are coming to Pakistan we need to new businesses and also encourage more companies to establish plants in Pakistan.

Why don't you post pictures of your home furniture and compare it with IKEA?

IKEA don't have the capacity to design home furniture for Pakistanis and their requirements.

What kind of a plant do you think IKEA sets up? Let me know when you take a liking to MDF.

In Europe good quality furniture made from real wood are long gone and IKEA is no different. They deal with low quality functional furniture and other house hold stuff which customer assembles it at there own homes. IKEA brand is no different then McDonalds, KFC and pizza hut. There products are sourced from China, Vietnam and Malaysia etc so for them setting up any sort of manufacturing facilities in Pakistan are nothing more then wishful thinking. Its nothing more then Coco cola appearing in our country under different name for different products.

Bro, where did they say they were establishing manufacturing centers in Pakistan for export?

I don't think they even mentioned whether they were going to source from local manufacturers or at all.

In fact, most international brands that do manufacture in Pakistan like Suzuki, Daewoo, etc... do so to meet local demand while buying out or shutting out local brands. They don't actually export Pakistani made products.

This is why I've been adamant that Pakistan needs investment in its own brands to increase exports and reduce/substitute imports.

Honestly, we'll have to see what he does with a majority after the upcoming senate elections. If this is what they consider an "economic success" the future doesn't look good for the country.

Tree's can be replanted, as long as you manage the tree harvests it's can be done sustainably.

I'm all for manufacturing furniture in Pakistan but I don't think the tree's are in danger here because IKEA primarily sources from countries like China, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc... while I hear nothing about them actually manufacturing anything locally.

Let them come to Pakistan. Let local companies learn from the experience of competing with them. Then take that knowledge to compete on the global stage. Our companies need to learn to compete.

McDonald's can come to Pakistan, but a limited percent of the population will eat there; more as a novelty, but Pakistani companies that learn from the experience can go global.

In the Philippines, there is a fast food chain call Jolibees... I’ll let the following video explain better then I can.

Pakistan can learn from IKEA, but should find a way to put set their furniture part as well as take on the principles of easy to assemble but still sturdy

For example; A labor intensive option but high quality option to consider replicating is the Japanese wooden products made without nails. If we have a unique but relatively affordable product, Pakistanis furniture manufacturers could capture some part of the global market.

.
IKEA not only sells furniture but household goods, kitchen utensils including home textiles. It also sources most of the products from local countries and regions where it operates. If IKEA can't find anything in Pakistan which it can produce here cheaply and sell to other IKEA store world over, then I would say Pakistan is useless unfortunate country which has no future.

Mere bahi they will be paying Tax... and Pakistan or Private sector can talk them into manufacturing in Pakistan.

Bahi IKEA is reliable and light furniture which can be self assembled... but they will have to launch heavy stuff in Pakistan as Beds in Pakistan are well big and proper heavy..

.
who buys fake wood furniture in Pakistan?
Pakistanis are still stuck with imperialistic "Victorian" style furniture which is just outdated and stupid. Also the paint and top coat they use are substandard quality which degrades the quality of the wood work.
What Pakistan needs is modern sleek designed furniture and not 200 year old design furniture which has been pandofied over the years by patwari "estyle". And btw recycled wood furniture is the way to go if you want to live eco lifestyle.
