Defence Minister Calls for More JAS Gripen to Counter Russian Threat

Sweden’s Defense Minister Karin Enstrom says the military should get a total of 70 new JAS Gripen combat aircraft, ten more than Parliament had earlier decided.

Enstrom’s comments came in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine and also of widely publicized Russian military flight incidents last year, when Moscow attack aircraft flew practice missions over Sweden.

Those flights and the ongoing insecurity in Ukraine has alarmed Swedish officials.

“Russia’s actions in and around Ukraine has led to uncertainty in Europe. What happened in the past has made it really necessary to strengthen Sweden’s defense,” Enstrom told the Swedish daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter.

Parliament had already agreed to purchase 60 Jas Gripen’s, which are made and designed by Saab AB, but Enstrom believes that 10 more should be bought.

Any purchase would be preceded by proper procurement and pricing protocols to ensure fairness and transparency, she said.

I swear that was my first impression as well. But, even if we consider such scenario then question arises. . .Can addition of 10 more Grippens halt or put a dent in Russian Air dominance/superiority?

Think bigger,if ever a situation,then Sweden of all countries ''bordering''(close to) Russia would never be left alone.
Btw it starts with 10 ,then lets make a new squadron then a group/wing.

Absolutely right. Although, I was thinking of it as an isolated case -which was foolish of me- but, the Defense Minister really made it seem that way, didn't she? As far as Russia is concerned, it had really huge stakes in Crimea the foundations of which was laid centuries ago during the Xar's era and shared culture and heritage with them. What happened there, is a different story all in itself, the comparison to which (Sweden) is simply ridiculous.

Conclusion, SAAB needed help and Minister came to rescue. Its rather about business vs Russia being the villain, monster, invader, adventurer etc.

If every country that can't match a would be agressive neighbour in numbers would think that way,might as well disband a national army.On the contrary,Russia is the only plausible threat to Sweden,however unlikely that might be.

Btw,slightly off topic,the Swedish Defence Minister is a woman,mother of three who goes to job riding a bike without bodyguards,police escort,etc.The Norwegian Prime Minister goes to his office on the subway and shops alongside his wife in mall also without security detail.God,you got to love those Nordics.

Ryssland has always been our enemy since 1788 war, many swede still remember the bitter result of Russian separate Finland from the kingdom of Sweden.

Our only enemy is Ryssland, in WW2, we almost join the war in axis side when Ryssland attack Finland. It never cease to be our enemy, even today. We share the Baltic sea and with Ryssland almost aggressive stance in the Baltic, increase exercise in the Baltic sea, it started to raise the alarm once again.

That's the main reason why we join the EU anyway, if Ryssland is not a threat, and we know we cannot resist Ryssland, we would never join EU in the first place.

You don't know much of Swedish History.......

During the past 500 years, We swede fought about 30 major wars, Ryssland is involved in 14 of those and another 10 with indirect involvement.

We have a serious war with Ryssland every 100 years even in the 1800s when we declare permanent neutrality....

They tried in 1941 remember? We did not do anything...

German back then attempted to assist the Fins but when we saw them occupied Norway themselves, we did not allow their troop to send over from Germany (Although we did agree to turn a blind eye to allow volunteer brigade to transit between Norway to Finland via Swedish lowland.)

And both Finland and Sweden are not part of NATO, we are part of EU....so it probably true if Ryssland attack Finland, NATO would have just sit and watch like they did with Ukraine

For us, we don't really care...

Even tho we are not part of NATO, we did what NATO ask us to do, I even got send over to Afghanistan to oversee a military prison. Which I don't think is any of our Swede business.

In theory, we don't support NATO, and we will never join them, but under the table, we are already a part of them, because we know EU without NATO is totally and utterly useless...

Times have changed since the last World War,Nato would help you because,many of the EU countries are NATO countries,so NATO would be forced to help.

it didn't help turkey much as the War we fought the Russian because Gustav III want to divert the domestic problem against a foreign entity. But that did not do too much good on him anyway.

And we are weary about NATO, we always treated NATO with suspicion. Not sure if they would help out if we need them with the Ryssland
