PESHAWAR: Almost a hundred per cent increase has been reported in the attendance of Swat Police during the past one week as the entire force resumed wearing trousers that they had stopped following threats from Taliban.

Nine old and five newly established police stations were made properly functional with the establishment of four new sub-divisional offices of the police to restore peace in the valley. As many as 680 cops were performing duty in Swat till last week after several hundred had deserted the force due to Taliban threats.

On Tuesday, their number rose to 1,225 with traffic police returning to duty on roads to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and help guide the arriving convoys of IDPs.“The morale is high. I think we have the best cops in Swat, but they just need to be commanded well,” the deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Malakand, Muhammad Idrees Khan, told The News. He said that among 1,225 cops, 250 were from the FRP while 97 had been drawn from the Elite Police Force.

Idrees was posted as DIG Malakand to improve the law and order situation in the troubled division, which deteriorated in the absence of a DIG for the past many months.Known as a brave officer, Idrees performed well against terrorists in another volatile division, Kohat, in recent months for which he was awarded the first-ever Chief Minister’s Award.

“Five more police stations were established, while the number of sub-divisions in Swat has been increased from three to seven. This will also increase the number of DSPs. Apart from this, two SPs operation would also be appointed in the district to monitor the law and order,” said Idrees.

DIG Idrees said the entire Swat valley had been connected through wireless while 14 new vehicles and eight armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were provided to the force. “The cops in Swat were wearing shalwar qameez after Taliban threatened them against wearing trousers. Now we have ensured that all would wear trousers as it is part of discipline,” he said.

The officer said that the visit of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Malik Naveed Khan to the Khwazakhela and Kabal police stations boosted the morale of the personnel of the force. “The IGP gave promotion to a number of brave cops, besides inaugurating the martyrs’ monument at the Police Lines. This did a great job in boosting morale of our cops,” Idrees said.

He praised his cops as well as the public and local representatives. He went on to say that local MPAs were doing a great job in helping the police and Army in restoration of peace in the violence-hit Malakand.

“The local people, who are fed up with the Taliban, on Tuesday along with the cops held seven militants and snatched weapons from them. They are now coming out openly against the terrorists who have made life miserable for them,” the officer added.

it wont be fair if i dont appreciate GoP for all their efforts. despite all their short-comings they have successfully pulled it off.

this is something at which many of us were casting our doubts. will police come back in action? well we have got our answer. another thing to note is that gov has already increased the number of police stations which a really gud sign. also some of the elite police force has also become a part of swat police. with further expansion, im sure police force will successfully contain talibans from rising again. with the establishment of army contonement situation will further improve. last two lines of the above article mention local + police working together to arrest terrorists. meaning confidence is slowly comin back and ppl of swat have decided that they will not let this happen again. they have taken things into their own hands.

I think present police can not deal with terrorists , we need to train them for counter insurgency .

elite force and FRP is also a part of this new police force. other than that new police stations have also been established. with only few terrorists left the valley, i think police, with the help of locals, can make sure that talibans dont come back to the valley. other than this army is gonna stay in swat anyways.
however if the samething happens again then u r rit in sayin that it will be hard for police to deal with the situation.

Army should move into baraks to perform their prime duty to defence the frontiers ASAP.

Longer stay of army near civilian population may creat lot of social problems, ie in Azad Kahmir soldiers dont like to go on vocation to their homes????

We also need to shift all birgade and core head quaters atleat 50 kilometers away from civilian population.

It is responsibility of police to maintain law and order,but i have not seen our leaders have any long term plan for that in near future.

but i guss we need 1000 , elite police cops & teams of SOP from newly trainned FC , at least 500 to 700 personals, it will boost , the confideience level of both GOVT officials & civilians, in swat valley!
heavy armed presence is needed , in swat at least for the comming 6 months.

The Elite police should not be mingled in with regular police in a hodgepodge manner.

Elite police squads need to serve as rapid response units and as well equipped patrol units dedicated to addressing insurgent attacks and activity. The regular police needs to serve as the regular law enforcement arm.

its oky in swat right now but , how long it will be oky there ,tht has to be seen, till that PAKARMY should have to stay , in swat to boost the level of trust & confidence among , the police force and govt officials over there?
sory to say, that the situation in SWAT was never been a product of so-CALLED , pakarmy's attrocities on the gen. population of SWAT!
that situation was created , because of challenging the writ of the GOP , by stupid & "*****" mullaha - FM & his FOOL CRIMINAL SUPPORTERS, so it is really crazy to even think about , taking the troops back in to baracks, for now !

The Pakistan army did say after the succesfull completion of the operation they will stay in Swat for atleast a year to ensure that the police and the local authorities deal with law and order effectively.

I think SSG Commandos should be stationed in Swat to be deployed immediately in case of a major attack on Swat by Talibans and to be deployed anywhere in Swat if there is any peace problem.

Police force need to be better equiped and trained. May be a combination of local youth and retired jawans can do the trick.

I think they should recruit more local people that have suffered from this war. Many people would have lost their homes and livelihood so this would give them employment, plus I am sure that such people would be more determined to keep the Taliban out this time. Employment for people that don't have a job plus better security=win win situation for Swat.

We should not under estimate the terrorists , they can regain strength,if GOP did not try to reestablish the local tribel system which is only long term stable system and also acceptable to local population.

The peace can only be attained through fair and free justice system , we know that our present justice system need lot of changes to fulfill the needs of brave people of SWAT and NWFP .

If you want to continue the old security and justice system then good luck for you but the system which fails once could also fail again.

FYI: Nizam-e-Adal Law will be established in Swat as soon as Swatis return from Camps.This has been confirmed by Swat Commissinor he said we're doing it because Swatis want this.
