Swat militants declare unilateral ceasefire till 11th

MINGORA: Militants operating in the restive Swat valley on Friday announced a unilateral ceasefire till the third day of Eidul Azha in reverence of the religious festival, while the sister of a journalist was killed in firing by the security forces.

The spokesman for the militants said that they had decided to announce a unilateral ceasefire for a week starting from today (Saturday). He said the decision was taken to show respect for Eidul Azha.

However, on Friday the incidents of violence continued in parts of the troubled valley. There was no let-up in attacks against the government schools as the militants burnt a middle school in Alamganj area of Khwazakhela. The furniture and official record was reduced to ashes.

In another incident, the sister of a prominent Swat-based journalist, Shireen Zada, was killed when his house allegedly came under fire from the security forces in Kanju area of the Kabal Tehsil during a military operation.

The aggrieved journalist, employed by a private television channel, accused the security forces of deliberately targeting his house and killing his sister. However, a spokesman for the security forces maintained that the soldiers had not fired at the house of Shireen Zada.

He insisted that a stray bullet had hit Zada’s sister. He said after defusing a bomb in the area after a tip-off, the forces heard some gunshots that prompted the troops to fire in the air, and in the process a stray bullet hit the sister of Zada.

The Inter-Services Public Relations said that curfew would be imposed on all of Swat valley except the main road leading from Landakay, the entry-point to Swat, to the main town of Mingora. In another development, the militants who had come from other areas of the valley to Banjut have vacated the village voluntarily.
