SRINAGAR: Suspected rebels armed with automatic weapons attacked two soldiers guarding a highway in Indian-administered Kashmir on Wednesday, killing one of them and wounding the other, officials said.

The “hit and run” attack occurred on the outskirts of Srinagar, Indian Kashmir's main city, paramilitary spokesman Kishore Prasad said.

Police and soldiers cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to find the militants.

No rebel group immediately claimed responsibility for the latest attack in Kashmir, where an armed uprising and subsequent crackdown by Indian forces have left about 68,000 people dead since 1989.

Although the armed rebellion is largely suppressed, resentment against Indian rule runs deep.

Indian police and army officials have said separatist rebels were becoming more active in recent months. The rebels want either independence or incorporation into neighboring Pakistan.
