Survey: China Seen as Overtaking U.S. as Economic Superpower

Expats ‘chasing their fortunes’ in China

Its ancient culture and beautiful scenery draw thousands of visitors every year, but it seems that increased salaries and better career opportunities are what appeal most to Britons about living in the Middle Kingdom.

According to a survey by NatWest International Personal Banking, 86 per cent of British expats in China think the high salary they receive is one of the best aspects of life there.

Sixty-nine per cent like the career advancement the country offers them, while a much lower proportion enjoy the exciting culture (48 per cent) and the Chinese people (43 per cent).

China’s booming economy is drawing more and more number of foreigners every year, many of whom are looking to flee the salary freezes and rampant unemployment of the debt-struck Western world.

Statistics released by the NatWest earlier this year found that there has been an 18 per cent increase in the number of expats working in China and Singapore in the past five years, while the number working in the US has plummeted by 11 per cent.

The new research found that the majority (63 per cent) of expats in China were sent there on work assignments, mainly by international companies looking to expand their market presence. But around four in 10 (37 per cent) moved there to work as English teachers, for whom there is a huge demand.

The most common sectors to work in after education were finance (19 per cent) technology (15 per cent) and health care (12 per cent).

Other benefits of living in China were identified as increased cross-cultural awareness (74 per cent) and the friendliness towards foreigners (63 per cent). Overcrowding and pollution, language difficulties and the communist state's strict censorship however were causes of concern for many expats.

Dave Isley, head of NatWest IPB, said: “The emergence of China as a world trade crusader certainly seems to have enticed British expats in search of their fortune. With a wealth of career opportunities and high salaries, China seems to be a magnet to British expats."

A survey carried out by HSBC last year found that expats in China were optimistic about the country’s economic future, with 95 per cent agreeing that the economy was strong. China's growth however is slowing, with the economy expanding at its weakest pace in nearly three years in the first quarter of 2012.

Israel will get swallowed by the rage of the Arabian people once US is gone.
That's not true. It's just dirty western propaganda to portray all Arabs and Muslims as savages. Arab countries would make peace with Israel, if the Zionist entity allowed a Palestinian state, which they won't.

Muslims have always protected Jews when the West was committing genocides against them. But then, Zionists are an evil people, they aren't Jews. It's a sick and evil ideology of destruction and barbaric oppression.

The PLO and Hamas do not want peace with Israel. They want to destroy Israel. Israelis and the world leaned that in 2000 when Perez offered Arafat all the lands, included East Jerusalem, for the new Arab state. Arafat refused, insisting that the Palestinian refugees must be allowed to reclaim their land in the Israel proper. As a result, the world leaned that Palestanians use negotiations for peace to bide time in order to extinguish Israel. What should the Israeli's do?

You do know Chinese textbooks never mentioned that KMT forcefully drafted hundreds of thousands of men to fight the Japanese, and most of those died of malnutrition and abuse before they even see the front line? That's just one of the dozens of facts CCP rarely mentions to the public. Go ahead and read American Dixie mission to China to see an outsider's opinion of KMT. They were so incompetent that Americans thought about killing the leader Chiang Kai-shek so they could assume command.

And if you think CCP is corrupt and brutal in suppressing dissent, they look like angels compared to KMT.

More people see China as the world's top economy, poll finds
More people see China as the world's top economy, poll finds - latimes.com

Never mind that the U.S. economy is about twice the size of China's. More people than ever perceive the Asian giant as the world's dominant economic power, according to a Pew Research Center global survey.

The results are believed to reflect popular opinion that the U.S. and Chinese economies are heading in opposite directions.

"The global financial crisis and the steady rise of China have led many to declare China the world's economic leader," said the report, which was released Wednesday and also addressed a series of global opinions on the perception of nations and their leaders.

For the first time, respondents around the world picked China as the world's leading economy over the U.S., by a margin of 42% to 36%.

Asked the same question last year, a median of 41% said the U.S. is the world's leading economy and only 35% picked China.

Even many American respondents said they believed China was ahead, with 41% saying China was the leading power and 40% saying the U.S.

Chinese respondents were more sanguine (and realistic), with 48% calling the U.S. the primary economic power and 29% choosing China.

There's ample reason to believe that China is ascendant. The country was able to insulate itself from the 2008 financial crisis with minimal exposure to foreign banks. What it lost in trade it made up for with a massive stimulus plan. China is also sitting on a cache of $3.2 trillion in foreign reserves that many believe it can wield as a financial weapon.

But China's path to global dominance is anything but assured and, at the very least, decades off, economists say.

In a research note released Thursday, Credit Suisse economist Dong Tao said China's economic model was running out of steam and that the country could face weak growth for a prolonged period.

Dong said the state's top-down structure is squeezing the private sector -- an important cog China will need to elevate its development.

"At this moment, China has largely consumed the benefits of previous reforms, and the economy needs a new structural breakthrough," Dong wrote. "But instead, the leaders in Beijing have followed the example of their western counterparts by 'printing money' and spending fiscal dollars."

He continued: "These kind of stimuli can help ease the pain on slow growth and prevent a hard landing, but are unlikely to generate upward growth momentum and take the economy to a new height, in our view. In fact, it seems that the government spending has crowded out private investment."

I think both KMT and CCP fought side by side with Japanese..so why are you accusing KMT for recruiting soldiers???and what are you trying to claim??CCP never recruited forcefully???KMT made supreme sacrifice in WW2.they lost atleast 4-5 times more men in WW2.and thats why they lost the civil war.

From the same survey;

I suggest MODS use this post as a typical example of TROLLING.

back to the topic.

If the Chinese are wise, they should downplay such survey and keep work hard and smart, especially in resolving internal issues. Maintain a low profile is important.

American advisors to both KMT and CCP during WWII specifically mentioned that CCP was much more effective at utilizing resources and enlisting volunteers than KMT. Since vast majority of people in China at the time were poor peasant farmers, CCP's land reform program was extremely popular and they had virtually no shortage of recruits. On the other hand, KMT was controlled by several large political families and warlords that controlled the vast majority of the wealth, and utilized brutal policies to keep their rule intact.

You mentioned sacrifices. Yes KMT troops made tons of heroic sacrifices, but victory is measured in how many battles you've won, not how many men you lost. KMT officers were extremely imcompetent during the war, leading to unneccessary deaths of hundreds of thousands of men. At the beginning of the civil war they had 3 to 1 numerical superiority to the Communists, and they squandered it away.

Remember, meaningless sacrifices are an act of stupidity, not heroism. KMT's leadership of the country made countless such sacrifices, while failing to advance the country's people.
