It seems that the boundaries of political landscape in Pakistan have mostly been drawn along the provincial and ethnic lines. There is no single party that can claim to have a nation-wide representation. In the political history of Pakistan, we have seen how various politicians were able to galvanize the nation to have a very firm nation-wide appeal. And I believe that some political parties can repeat the same feat again.
However, firstly we would want to analyze what is the reason behind the current division of the political scenario along the provincial lines. I think when politicians fail to take important steps to improve the future of the nation, it is very natural that population succumbs to ethnic appeal and influence of the local landlords though some good and very honest politicians also continue in politics but they fail to have decisive support in the parliament to take the right steps for the nation. I believe that it would only be possible for progressive political parties to get out of the current trap of local landlords and other electables, who are more interested in their own gains and increasing their influence than honestly serving the people of the nation, if the leaders of progressive political parties can take decisive steps that have a nation-wide appeal and win the hearts of Pakistani public. I would like to say that people of Pakistan are intelligent enough that when right steps are taken and the importance of the right steps is emphasized, they would go out of the way to appreciate the right steps and the politicians who made the decisions to take the right steps. I would also like to mention that educated urban middle class population of Pakistan has the greatest tendency to rise out of ethnic lines and bring good and honest Pakistani leaders from other parts of the country when the urban population knows that those leaders would in fact take very right steps to improve the destiny of the nation. But I would also suggest that rural population could also have very similar appeal if the leaders take the right steps for their better future something that has probably never happened in the history of our country.
I believe that probably the most important step we have to take is to properly educate the children of our nation. If the people of a nation are well-educated, they are an asset to the nation and if they are ignorant and poorly-educated, they become a great burden against every good thing in the nation. Previously, there have been some lukewarm efforts to make the decision that every child in the nation would be educated but these decisions could never possibly be implemented. In fact these decisions are strongly resisted by some rural population especially despite the fact that they would like a great future for their children. Sometimes, they know that it would be totally impossible for them to take their children to school in the morning in far off areas. Secondly the opportunity cost for families for sending their children to school is very high especially when the parents know that bad quality education is not going to make a great difference towards the better destiny of their children and the families would rather employ their children in agriculture or other small trades.
I would suggest the following steps for the political parties who want to gain a national foothold by showing great performance in giving education to children in their provinces. I think a good education infrastructure has to be developed that includes proper school buildings, transport from various areas to the schools, provision of food in the schools for children, a small need based stipend for the poor children, very properly trained teachers in every school, very competitive modern syllabus and a liaison between parents and the trained school staff to emphasize the importance of education to parents in rural areas and to give them suggestions to take the right steps at home that can make it easy to facilitate learning for the children both at home and school. Many of these steps seem very difficult and expensive but I strongly believe that they are not hugely expensive and a proper planning can in fact easily accomplish this task.
I would try to bring across the point that making of good roads and other infrastructure is definitely very important but it is far more important to properly educate the children of the nation. I would like to give the example of China where the literacy rate is very high and when there were right economic conditions in China with the passage of time, they were able to strongly industrialize and take off their economy and country. In order to properly benefit from the CPEC and other related developments, we would like our country to have a good educated population that can transform our country just like the phenomenon we saw in China. We would never be able to get maximum benefit from CPEC if the children of the nation are not properly educated and we will strongly limit any gains from CPEC if we do not take the right steps now. This point can not be more emphasized.
I would again make this suggestion for good politicians of PML, Tehreek Insaf and PPP to consider implementing these suggestions and ask their experts to brainstorm and plan how to take the right steps in this direction. People had a great expectations from Imran Khan especially because he was emphasizing that he would take right and decisive steps for a modern education infrastructure. I would suggest that he should take effective and well planned steps now so people in other parts of the country could really appreciate the good work done in KPK. Contrary to what people might say, there is still a good amount of time before next elections and if honest steps are taken now for a better future of the children in KPK, I am sure his party could get a wide country-wide appeal. I would make the same suggestions for the Sindh CM who has done a lot of good things for the people in Sindh and if they can deftly develop a great education infrastructure in Sindh, they could easily get popular support in other parts of the country where people's party used to have great support. It would be a gigantic step and nearly impossible for PPP to make inroads in other parts of the country if they fail to take such important progressive steps that show their honesty for a better future for people of Pakistan. In fact I would love to agree with the proposal of Mahmood Khan Achackzai who had asked that Afghan refugees should be allowed to settle in Pakistan on this(my) condition that proper steps are taken for the great education of refugee children because Pakhtuns are an integral part of Pakistan and therefore if Pakhtuns from other places are suffering, we would love to welcome them especially if they could greatly contribute to the future of our country.
