Dhaka, May 7: A local Sufi Muslim leader in bangladesh has been hacked to death in a suspected Islamist killing on Saturday. The incident took place two weeks after a liberal professor in the country was murdered after which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility behind the killing. It is noteworthy that today’s killing took place in the same northwestern district.
Report suggest that the victim was not a famous Sufi and there could be a possibility that he was killed by Islamist militants. Nisharul Arif, Rajshahi district police chief reportedly said, that the killing was ‘similar’ to a recent incident of murder that took place in last couple of months.
In last two or three months communal tension and murder on grounds of religion are on a rise in Bangladesh. Since 2013, Bangladeshi Islamist militants have been blamed for a number of murders of secular bloggers and online activists who had raised their voice against the growing fundamental activities there.
According to police, in each of the attacks, unidentified assailants hacked the victim to death with cleavers and machetes.
