Submarine Proliferation and International Security

nice article. when our Arihant becomes operational we will too have a large fleet of SSBNs:-)

A noob question

Why have the americans and British exited the international submarine market. Why don't they make diesel subs anymore?

Diesel subs are only good in coastal waters and does not have range to put up a challenge in open Oceans. USA does not have any threat of a hostile Navy in its coastal waters due to it being protected by two Oceans, neither does its neighbours have a strong Navy to spur USA into building SSKs.Same with UK and for France too.

As per 2013 figures global submarine market was only $13 billion which is expected to grow $ 21-22 billion ... so not such lucrative market I guess for USA & UK ....

It is big enough a market. In case of USA, I think that their capability has atrophied as their shipyards lost ability to design and manufacture SSKs as export orders are not predictable enough to keep invested in an technology. In case of UK, its Navy has been technologically dependent on USA since second world war.

The article doesn't mention the PN subs, because we are way better than the countries he mentioned.
PN has been operating subs since 1964 and is professionally proficient in Sub Ops. 51 years is a pretty long time.

We have a very professional sub crew, which is selected on volunteer basis, so there is no problem of dedication.
The training's at STC are very well designed and imparted by qualified instructors.

War patrols is a common feature for our submariners and it really tests the endurance of man and machine.

PN was the first to fire an encapsulated Harpoon from its subs and this integration was done by our own engineers.
Although PN only bought 3 X 90Bs, but this gave us the experience of submarine design & construction, which is valuable.
The same experience is being used in the modification of the modified Yuan class subs.

The integration of the SLCM is also a milestone, which takes our sub force to another dimension altogether.

infact this article claims Pakistan and India together. But like u mentioned we r operating them since 51 years, we also have sub kill which is first since WW2.

There is an inspiration for others to follow PN even with such limited resources they even blocked enemy's main ports twice in two wars they participated with just two individual subs.

Remember that?
