Long range air to air missiles don't have IFF. A Buk shot down MH17 in Ukraine. Killed hundreds. Long range missiles go after friendly planes too.

The only way to be safe is fire long range missiles from a short distance of no more than 10 km.

Iran used AIM-54 Phoenix at distances of only 20 km or less.
