Not sure how this is funny.
Stupid perhaps if comparison is being made in complexion.
And that stupidity comes on us south Asians then, being subservient to the "white" complexion even after 65 years of ejecting our white sahibs out.

If it is about her looks, yes.. she does look slightly haggard as compared to the American girl. But she's in a religious gathering it appears and I doubt the American actress is out without an iota of makeup about.

The US actress is prettier than her in my view with softer features. Just depends on your taste then.
However, it must be kept in mind when judging such comparisons how the profession is viewed in the two societies.
Acting for all its popularity in India is still considered a risky and dirty field in India, Not so in the US.

Not quite. It comes more from the local ruling and elitist classes in history. For example in Punjab a beautiful woman was one who was fair and chubby like the chodrahni. Two traits which you could only have when you didn't have to work yourself to death under the sun in the fields; signs of social and economic prosperity and fertility etc, etc. In rural areas these criteria still hold today. In the Hindu circles the Brahmans were a lot fairer than the subordinate classes. And the highest in hierarchy within Brahmans were Kashmiri Brahmans (whiter than the whites of the west). The Central Asians that came and ruled for so long, again very fair. These insecurities are more indigenous, after all we've had some pretty fair ethnicities living here since long before the British.

This phenomenon isn't even limited to just us. The Japs are pretty crazy about fair skin as well. Other regions of the world have had other equally stupid measures of beauty. One example would be during the renaissance when, for the exact same reasons as in Punjab, chub buckets with very pale skin were thought to be beautiful. So much so that in one place everyone started plastering their faces with a paste made from white lead. Obviously, it made them sick and ruined their skin but it didn't stop here. Soon the measure of beauty had 'ruined skin' added to 'being chubby with a pale complexion' because the paste was very expensive and only the rich could afford it....
