SINGAPORE — People in Singapore who received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine have been observed to have lower protection against severe disease when infected by the Delta coronavirus strain, compared to those who were fully vaccinated with the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

This was based on a recent study conducted here by the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and the Covid-19 data management and analytics team of the Ministry of Health (MOH).

“This supports the need for three doses of the Sinovac-Coronavac vaccine as a primary series,” NCID and MOH said.

In a news release on Wednesday (Dec 15), they said that the study specific to Singapore’s population was done from Oct 1 to Nov 21 and covered 1.25 million people.

The people who were part of the research were aged 40 and above and who received two doses of the vaccines under the national vaccination programme.

“The analysis accounted for differences in age, gender, race, housing type and the daily differences in infection rate,” they said.

Based on the analysis, the effectiveness of two doses of the Sinovac vaccine was 60 per cent against severe disease.

This is lower than that for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which was 90 per cent, and for the Moderna vaccine, which was 97 per cent.

“These results support the need for three doses of Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccines as a primary series to attain better protection against severe disease, defined as requiring oxygen and intensive care, and death due to Covid-19,” NCID and MOH said.

People who have received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine are recommended to receive a dose of an mRNA vaccine as their third dose as part of their primary vaccination series.

Otherwise, they should complete the primary series of vaccination with a third dose of the Sinovac vaccine.

NCID and MOH said that their recommendation is substantiated by international findings.

Based on preliminary data from Chile, people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as their third dose after two doses of Sinovac “had a 95 per cent reduction in the risks of infection”.

“In contrast, the risk reduction in persons who received Sinovac-CoronaVac as the third dose was 71 per cent.

“The antibody rise was also observed to be around 27 times higher when the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was received as the third dose compared to if Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine was received,” NCID and MOH said.

In Singapore, anyone eligible to be vaccinated will be able to receive their booster doses of the mRNA vaccine five months after completing their primary vaccination series, or two doses.

“We will continue to monitor the vaccine effectiveness of the mRNA and non-mRNA vaccines, including how they are enhanced by a third dose or a booster dose. In the meantime, all persons who are eligible for their boosters should get boosted when it is offered to them,” they added.

Earlier this month, MOH reminded those who have had their first two doses of the Sinovac or Sinopharm vaccines to take their third.

The ministry warned that they will lose their fully vaccinated status in the new year if they do not do so by Dec 31.

In other words, Pfizer is 4x more effective than Sinovac in reducing the number of severe cases, and Moderna is 3.33x more effective than Pfizer in reducing the number of severe cases.

Pfizer, Moderna vaccines side effects much higher. Sinovac no side effects at all, much safer for elder people.
Also, Omicron is coming, Pfizer, Moderna vaccines is useless against Omicron base on research in Germany.

Agree with you.
I paid $116 for 2 dose Sinovac even though Pfizer, Moderna are free precisely because for fear of adverse side effects and UNKNOWN LONG TERM ILL EFFECTS.

Recently Sinovac is also free.
If 3 doses of Sinovac are needed, SO BE IT.
My neighbor staying next block died next day after Moderna jab, but it was not reported in the news even after waiting many days for it.

These results are SKEWED, because most of those who opted for Sinovac even though it is NOT FREE like Pfizer and Moderna did so because they have medical issues, like yours truly.

I knew one of relative of our PDF member was killed by Pfizer. Killed, I mean it.

The 3rd phrase of trial was not completed at all before it was approved. The clinical data of 3rd phrase of trial was tampered.

This info was exposed recently. The side effect was hidden on purpose by Pfizer.

Not true, all vaccines have side effects, just higher or lower incidence rate. At the end of the day, you have to decide whether the risk of dying from vaccine side-effects or getting severe illness from infection is higher. Especially for the elderly.

Sinovac is inactive vaccine, no side effects at all.

Sinovac is inactive vaccine, no side effects at all.

In fact, the percentage of reported severe side effects is actually slightly higher for Sinovac in both Singapore and Hong Kong.

You do A/B test base on same conditions. Not like this.

It's very possible that, elder people prefer Sinvovac due to inactive vaccine and safty.

Pharmaniaga: Sinovac booster shots 94% effective against Omicron

December 18, 2021

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 18): Pharmaniaga Bhd said early data from studies shows that the Sinovac vaccine booster shots are 94% effective against the Omicron variant.

The studies by Sinovac Biotech Co Ltd involved two strains of the new variant from Hong Kong, it said in a statement on Saturday (Dec 18).

Lab results showed that when tested against one of the Omicron strains, 35% of the 20 serum samples (7/20) from recipients of two CoronaVac doses tested positive for the neutralising antibody, and 94% of the 48 samples (45/48) from recipients of three doses tested positive for the neutralising antibody.

Comparative testing using the other strain of the Omicron variant is underway.

Pharmaniaga said Sinovac is conducting further studies involving sera with different antibody levels and at a wider variety of post-immunisation points of time in order to achieve a comprehensive evaluation of Omicron’s impact on the vaccine.

This supports the statement made by Sinovac Biotech senior director of oversea business Weining Meng, who said a booster shot given at an interval of six to 12 months after the second dose led to a strong boost in immune response with geometric mean titers (GMTs) increasing to approximately 140.

Meng was quoted as saying the GMTs of six months after the third dose is higher than the peak of the second dose.

“In addition, the studies also showed higher persistence of antibody six months of the booster dose compared to the second dose, indicating a longer duration of protection from Covid-19 and new variants,” Meng said.

Pharmaniaga said these scientific studies also are in line with the statement made by Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin on Friday asking all adult Sinovac recipients and those above 60 years old, regardless of their types of vaccines, to take the booster shots by end-February 2022.

That's your hypothesis though. I remember a study that vaccine side effects are generally stronger in younger people because their body would mount a stronger immune response.

My point is, all vaccines including inactive vaccines carry a certain level of risks, but the incidence rate leading to severe AE is extremely extremely low at 0.006%. Thus, the benefits of vaccinating outweighs the risk, and the focus should be on the efficacy of protection against severe disease. Far more people have died due to the virus rather than the vaccine. With vaccinations, the mortality rate for Delta is around half of influenza.

*The numbers above are for Delta, but it's almost certain than Omicron is gonna be the dominant strain soon.

Sinovac Better

SINGAPORE, George Yeo, former Health Minister (2004-2011) grilled MOH (Ministry Of Health) for misleading Singaporean by potraying Pzifer favorably; while ignoring Sinovac actually performed superbly in Thailand health workers case.

1) Recently on July 12 former Minister George Yeo posted on his Facebook about the biased press attacks on Sinovac.

"617 out of 670,000 vaccinated healthcare workers got infected. That’s less than 0.1%. The headline is misleading." This is in defense of the relentless attacks by Reuters on Sinovac.

2) The senior leadership of Pfizer and Reuters are one & the same person — James C Smith. (See background in Pfizer webpage.)

3) MOH simply echoes & relies on Reuters News about negative reports of Sinovac in Indonesia to delay approval of Sinovac for inclusion in the national vaccination program. However, the Vaccine Committee should have advised MOH to follow peer-review published by reputable medical journals to rate Covid-19 vaccines.

4) A role Model of objectivity & fairness would be Madam Ho Ching who actually quoted Lancet that defended Sinovac.

5) Given that intimate relationship between Reuters and Pfizer why did the Vaccine Committee not warned MOH of the conflict of interests in Reuters’ biased reporting of Sinovac?

6) Why did the Vaccine Committee not castigate MOH for using Reuters instead of Lancet to explain whether Sinovac should be approved as part of the National Programme?

7) Could the Minister of Health politely remind and direct the Vaccine Committee and MOH to follow the excellent examples like Madam Ho Ching and Mr. George Yeo to be objective & fair in the approval process of Covid-19 vaccines. ( Also ask HSA why it takes 4-6 weeks to read two peer-review journals.)

Yours sincerely,

Posts made 5 months ago, lol. Ho Ching is now encouraging people to get their mRNA boosters.

Whether the foreign media portray Sinovac negatively or not, it doesn't matter now. We already have the statistics based on local data, which is in line with studies from Chile, Malaysia, Thailand, etc. Unless you believe they are all conspiracies lmao.
