West Bengal wants the Indian government to stop all future hydel projects on the Teesta river, the state's irrigation minister Rajib Bandopadhyay says.

Bandopadhyay told bdnews24.com that he has taken up the issue with chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who has agreed to move Delhi on the issue.

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation ( NHPC) has already set up three hydel projects on the Teesta in East Sikkim and at Kalijhora and Ranvi on the Bengal-Sikkim border.

"They (NHPC) have plans for ten more such projects to generate power from the Teesta. But this cannot be allowed," Bandopadhyay said.
The irrigation minister said that while these projects may be run of the river types and would not involve much reservoir storage, sudden release of water from the upstream during the monsoon could lead to an Uttarakhand type disaster from areas alongside the Teesta downstream.

"It could wipe out huge populations in West Bengal and perhaps further down in Bangladesh if there's such surge in water volume due to abrupt release," Bandopadhyay said, citing experts in his department.

The town of Jalpaiguri suffered heavily during 1968 in such an event when the Teesta swelled up suddenly due to heavy rush of water from upstream.

The NHPC, he said, have finalised these projects including the ten latest ones without consulting West Bengal, which was cleqrly unacceptable.

"Even officials of the Central Water Commission (CWC) told me they were not aware of these projects," Bandopadhyay said.

His department has opened two helplines to enable people in remote areas especially in upstream locations to alert them if there is a flash flood noticed upstream. “That will help us tackle the floods downstream."

No deals should be signed under this government. This topic has been discussed and should be banned from PDF.

Didi wants all the Teesta water for herself, she won't let it be shared under any agreement with BD and she doesn't want it utilized by Sikkim either. Didi's going to have a hard time, IF the congress comes back to power with a mandate they'll skewer her for her past temerity and if the BJP comes to power they'll skewer her because of her anti-development and industrialization stand.:D

Oh btw this is the same fellow who along with Didi ensured that no agreement on the teesta should be signed with BD whatsoever. :azn:

@BDforever ... Forget about Teesta dude.. its a lost cause. But you dont have to worry, no matter what the Chanakyans do we will always have more freshwater than them. We being a low-lying country downstream to them have groundwater available at a lesser depth. You can take a look at the Groundwater zoning map of BD and also India to understand what I am saying. There is nothing much they can do about it.

You are saying as if we are using water just to starve you people. We need it for electricity and our own farming, if you are blessed with groundwater, good for you then.

Dams are build all over India, not only the rivers that goes to bd.

Not exactly. Just because of India's continuous stealing of water the estuary in the south-west has been shifting inwards. Saline water intrusion has become a major problem for the southern parts of BD and the whole ecosystem has taken a major hit. But anyway, I dont need to explain anything to an Indian.

But you did anyway! No ones stealing your water, just cause the delta lies in your country doesn't mean you own all the water.

Agreed

Poverty during lean season must be shared.

Oh.. please we are not greedy as Indians. We just want our legitimate share since out of 375 kms of teesta, around 172 kms runs through BD. We have every right to claim at least 45% of its water.

Ugh not this again!

You can not divide the water based on the length of the river, as it doesn't take into account the water from the tributaries. It has to be done based on the command area of the river system.

85% of the Teesta’s command area, the agricultural land served by the river, is in India and only 15% in Bangladesh

End of discussion.

Does the Teesta flow along its entire length to the sea as Teesta or does it merge with other rivers once inside BD ?
