Steps taken to thwart attacks from Afghanistan: COAS

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said measures had been adopted to stop attacks from Afghanistan into the western borders of Pakistani, Geo News reported Thursday.

He was talking to media men after witnessing the Pak-Saudi joint military exercises Samsam-IV along with the visiting Prince Lieutenant General (Staff) Khalid Bin Bandar Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Commander Royal Saudi Land Forces.

The COAS added that the army had conducted operations in troubled areas and it was now the responsibility of the civilian administration to control the situation.

COAS said the solution to every problem was not an army operation. "The army's role is only to normalize the situation but it could not remain stationed in an area indefinitely," he added.

Lauding Saudi Arabia's role in Afghanistan, General Kayani termed it as significant.

Talking to journalists after watching Al Samsaam-IV, a joint military exercise with Saudi land forces near Jhelum, he expressed the hope that no such attack would take place.

Gen Kayani said Saudi Arabia had played an important role to maintain peace and stability in the region, especially in Afghanistan, and it still had a role in the neighbouring country and in regional security.

He said he had confidence in Pakistan Army that it was capable of defending the country.

In reply to a question, he said the army had achieved success against terrorists in Swat, Malakand and Waziristan, but there was no military solution to every problem.

He said the civil administration should take charge in areas which had been cleared by the army because it could not stay in any area permanently.

The army chief said the joint military exercises with Saudi Arabia were aimed at enabling the two forces to benefit from each other`s experience in counter-terrorism operations.

Terming Saudi Arabia a most important country for Pakistan, Gen Kayani said alongside government-to-government relations, the people of both the countries also enjoyed good brotherly relations.

Saudi Land Forces Commander Lt-Gen Khalid bin Bandar bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud said joint ventures like this would enhance the combat preparedness of the troops of both countries.—APP

Khalid Aziz writes that the army is deeply demoralized by the casualties the Islamist enemy has inflicted on it and does not wish to be stressed further - So these bravado statements are sad -- What Pakistan should, OUGHT to have done with this situation is to unite around a plan to finally clean up the rot - instead it seems we will be limping along as we have done in a way that has brought us to this sad state.

One soldier, 15 militants killed in cross-border attack


DIR: Attacks by militants based in Afghanistan continue and another such clash was reported near the Durand Line in Upper Dir district on Sunday in which one soldier and four militants were killed. Two personnel of the security forces also sustained injuries in the incident. Some circles put the death toll of attackers at 15.

The clash took place in Karakar, a village in the border region sited west of here in the Bin Bala area. A resident said it takes 30 minutes to walk to the Afghan border from the village, suggesting it was very close to the border. Requesting anonymity, he said Karakar villagers were well off and most of them had been working in the Gulf countries.

An official source confirmed the incident and the casualties, but said the clash had occurred in Panakot and not Karakar. Panakot is situated just four kilometres north of Dir town, the district headquarters of Upper Dir.

“The clash was triggered when militants fired at soldiers patrolling the road,” he said, requesting anonymity. However, residents said no such incident had happened. No other source reported any armed incident in Panakot.

Other sources said the incident took place in Karakar near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and confirmed the killing of one soldier and injuries to two others. Some news agencies, quoting official sources, reported that 15 militants were killed in the clash.

Taliban spokesman, Sirajuddin Ahmad, who calls reporters from Afghanistan, has claimed most cross-border attacks and bomb blasts in different districts of Malakand division. He is close to Maulana Fazlullah, the head of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Swat chapter. Troops in large number were deployed in Upper Dir and Chitral last month to prevent militants from launching cross-border attacks.
