PANAJI: State-of-the-art shore-based test facility for carrier-borne aircraft, built at naval air station Goa, Dabolim, has been commissioned.

Speaking on the occasion of commissioning of second wire of the arresting gear, RAdm (Retd.) Vineet Bakhshi VSM CMD GSL said "Training of naval pilots on MiG 29K has already commenced. The facility will ensure timely induction of Naval LCA (NLCA) into naval service and conserve ship-based test flying effort".

The facility is described as one of its kind in the South Asia and the third in the world. This installation replicates a shore-based facility of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, a press release said here. Spearheaded by the Aeronautical Development Agency, the complete structural work and system integration of SBTF was carried out by Goa Shipyard Ltd.

This will provide India with a capability for the test development of an aircraft before they are cleared for use on-board aircraft carriers. It will also provide the Indian Navy with a facility to hone the skills of its pilots before they are deployed on board.

Significantly, the SBTF is equipped with restraining gear system with ski-jump for take-off,arresting gear system for landing, optical landing system, TV landing control system, light signaling system and other associated auxiliary units, identical to those fitted on board the aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, the statement said.

Waiting for Naval Tejas..from last one and half year it's in HAL hanger......

Congrats for development of State of the art test facility. Even U. S. A is examining this new state of art test facility for 7th gen multirole fighter, 1200km long range radar of India, and new indigenous engine of India which is smallest in the world but with 200 times more powerful than Russian engine, Definitely , state of art facility.

Times of India, we live to ruin our name in integrity.
Nonetheless, a land based carrier qual facility is important for ensuring currency for nuggets and experienced avaitors alike in case the Vikramaditya(or Future Carrier) is at port.

cant that be substituted with a quality simulator, where far more possible scenarios can be trained for. Also how is this facility going to train pilots to land on a pitching and rolling deck?

This facility is only to train the Naval aviators in the basics of carrier operations- including landing and arrested landing. A very pragmatic decision to have this not to mention to aid the testing and development of the N-LCA. The IN also has full mission simulators for training their Pilots on:

Simulators are like this are good but nothing beats the real thing (actual ACC ops) and the SBTF offers a nice controlled intermediary step before the Aviators go straight onto the ACC.

Looking forward for the day N-LCA makes a landing in this facility.

Exaggeration is something Indian media will never give up. We like to communicate it that way, you have to read it that way. I ignore the title most of time and go by contents.

@Abingdonboy.. thanks a lot mate.. Can you tell me how is Indian navy picking its aviators from? Is it the IAF that is providing them with trained MiG 29 pilots or Indian Navy is separately picking and training its aviators.

IAF trains the navy pilots at Hyd. I heard that navy was going to train on its own after 2014(not sure). Navy picks it own cadets for air arm.
