NEW DELHI: Alleged state-backed Pakistani netizens in a bizarre move have backed Turkey bandwagon trending ‘Boycott UAE’ on Twitter after a Turkey-based account asked Pakistani’s to trend the hashtag highlighting the strengthening relationship between India and the UAE. This was a day after UAE backed by Saudi Arabia had blocked Pakistan’s move in OIC against India on the issue of “Islamophobia”.
Raising objections against PM Modi being given its highest civilian award and the UAE sending medical supplies to India amid the pandemic, the Turkish account stated that UAE was biased towards India and was silent on multiple issues like Kashmir, an issue on which Turkey ‘stood-by’ Pakistan.
According to sources, Pakistan’s move was backed by Turkey as part of Ankara’s strategy to oppose Saudi-UAE dominance in the OIC.
Maldives initiated move to oppose Pak’s rant against India at the recent Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) meet in UN had other backers from within the body signalling India’s growing stature in the Islamic World.
UAE chaired the virtual meeting of the permanent representatives (PR) in UN of OIC member states that took place on May 19. Pakistan’s PR to UN, Munir Akram, wanted to form a “small informal working group” to take collective action against India at the United Nations in wake of the “rising” Islamophobia in India. However, UAE rejected this demand of Pakistan and stated that forming of any new working group will only happen after it has been approved by all the foreign ministers of OIC member countries.
India’s other partners in the Islamic world including Oman, Algeria and others from Asia and Africa also tacitly backed Delhi at the May 19 meet.
Boycott UAE was started by the Turkish account in response to UAE’s growing support to Khalifa Hafter of Libya. Pakistani netizens, on the other hand, jumped on the bandwagon agreeing that Pakistan should impose sanctions against UAE when UAE’s relations with India were highlighted. Pakistan has been a heavy borrower from the UAE, and owes the country $30 billion dollars. UAE also provides jobs to thousands of Pakistani nationals.
