Sri Lanka's Killing Fields-atrocities by SL army against Tamil civilians

Horrifying documentary on heinous war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan army on Tamil civilian caught up in the final purge against the LTTE on 2009. Although the LTTE were equally vicious and showed little compassion for non combatants, the manner in which the Sri Lankan army appears to have engaged in systematic targeting of civilians, through attacking self designated 'no fire zones',repeatedly attacking hospitals,disrupting aid convoys etc, can only be described as genocide.

Channel 4 has been pursuing this, with support from UK based LTTE factions no doubt, for some time now and after watching this I hope the UNSC finally take note and ensure those involved are finally brought to justice.Regardless of the LTTE's alleged crimes, anyone who treats a fellow human being with such callousness and cruelty should be held accountable for their actions.

This documentary is also a grim reminder of the realities of war for people who routinely advocate it (including on here) on the basis of creed/ideology/territorial disputes etc

I agree there is awareness, certainly among Tamils and people in India, that the Sri Lankans deliberately targeted civilians during the final phases of their campaign against the LTTE, possibly in order to teach the populace a 'lesson' for their apparent support of the terrorists. I believe there was a brief investigation launched by the UN into the SL Army's conduct during the war, partly as a result of the sustained campaign here in the UK by Channel 4, but it was scuttled by the Sri Lankan government, who insisted on been handed the report prior to its release, which allowed them to prepare a detailed rebuttal in advance when it was finally made public. I also believe they engineered for the release to then happen over a weekend and coincide with another major global event (cant remember what) to minimise the media impact of the story.

Although some of this footage, particularly those relating to executions,was previously aired by Channel 4 albeit in an edited format, it was dismissed at the time by the Sri Lankan government as 'fake'. I think Sri Lanka's persistent refusal to validate any of the footage obtained by Channel 4 and their consequent denial of the atrocities captured in them, has driven Channel 4 to broadcast the footage in its entirety.The programme has also generated debate in the UK about media censorship and what can reasonably be broadcast on the box, given that a lot of this content is already freely available on the web.

The point is, I see no difference between these events and what happened in Srebrenica and Sarajevo but the sad truth is that events that happen on the other side of the world don`t always register in the white man's consciousness, possibly cause they half expect us 'gentiles' to be prone to causal violence of this sort..

Don`t get me wrong, I have no specific interest in the Sri Lankan conflict apart from that of someone appalled by what appears to have gone on there but I hope people take notice of this and hold those responsible to account. By adhering to international law and being seen as doing the victims justice, Sri Lanka will only be doing itself a service as it will help it grow in stature as a responsible member of the international community..

I am a tamil and i started crying after 24 mins .....my heart is not strong enough to watch this doc to the end.....DMK and india are as much responsible for this they let this happen when they had the power to stop this but they did not .

My blood pressure is shooting uncontrollably now..... cant even type properly....i no longer need to flaunt this indian flag anymore let me just remove it.

Maybe there should be a consensus now that killing civillians anywhere on any excuse = even "terrorism" is bad?

Too often I see people sympathising with the victims of one party while defending the atrocities of their own party, as if the "other" is not human, or less than human.

RIP to the victims. I hope no one tries to justify these atrocities on any stupid excuse.

Yep, I just finished watching whole clip. Honestly feel sad about the innocent civilians who face difficulties between SL Army and LTTE clashes but mentioning SL Army's target was Tamil civilians is so wrong.

That's a laudable thought but how? The bottom line is war dehumanises people. I don`t think soldiers seen in the footage executing blindfolded and defenseless captives and sexually degrading women, their comments about their victims, the crazed look in their eyes..I don`t think they would have acted in that manner had they been able to identify at least a bit of their own human selves in their victims. Personally I feel what we need is not yet another UN convention on human rights and treatment of civilians in conflict but a bit more insight into ourselves and the ability to respect our adversaries as a group of individuals, some good and some bad, and not stereotype them/ identifying them collectively as "evil and subhuman", which eventually leads to a sense of desensitisation/detachment form their suffering and paves the way for such events..

I highly doubt it. While most of us are against LTTE, we fully understand the reasons for the formation of LTTE. Please don't confuse LTTE with Tamil Cause.

India should make sure that the so called 13th ammendment of SL constitution is immediately implemented.
