An Indian Navy ship on a patrol turned out to be the saviour of a large group of fishermen from here when they were allegedly being chased away by Sri Lankan Navalmen close to International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), fisheries officials said today.

The fishermen had put out to sea in more than 600 boats yesterday after calling off their three-day old strike protesting detention of 23 fellow fishermen by Sri Lankan Naval personnel on June 20.

As they reached the area close to IMBL, they were chased away by Sri Lankan Navy men who came in their patrol boats, the officials said quoting the fishermen who returned to the shores in the wee hours today.

However, the Sri Lankan Navy men retreated on seeing the Indian Navy ship, they said adding the fishermen also told them they were able to fish without any trouble thereafter.

“We could fish without any problem till mid night and return to the shore,” one of the fishermen told officials.

The fishermen had a good catch as they put out to the sea after a gap of four days, officials said.

Navy and Coast Guard officials said they have intensified patrolling in the region in the wake of arrest of the 23 fishermen by Sri Lankan navy.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had taken up the fishermen arrest issue with Prime Minister and sought his intervention following which Sri Lanka assured that the fishermen would be released soon.

The Rameswaram fishermen withdrew their strike after talks with district and fisheries officials on June 23.

Actually, the fishermen have lost a sum of 15,000 Rs as they were not able to fish due to the SL Navy chase. SL Navy should behave wise when it comes to IMB. beating and cutting the nets of fishermen even some time restoring to firing at Indian Fishing boats is condemable and if the same continues, SL beaware that you are pocking a sleeping giant and you have to regret for your Navy's action.

What is this sudden display of aggressive behaviour by SL navy towards Indian fishermen ? The MEA should take this up at the highest level. Sometimes coercive diplomacy is quite necessary against unwanted actions , its good that as regional power we are able to de-escalate incidents , with our clout and keep the peace.

This is not sudden. . In last five years 7 people killed and more than 30 people injured in the firing of the lankans:angry: even worst is if they capture our boat they beat the people upto the death and take away all the fishes and net's:hitwall:

Then I would say , IN should conduct round-the-clock patrolling by Indian ships , Choppers , even surveillance satellites etc if necessary .

Stable relations are all very , but GOI has a duty to protect Indian civilians first . Sometimes some shaking down is necessary to preserve the peace. Evidently bolstered by the Lankan Civil war victories , they are flaunting their aggression towards Indian Tamil civilians.

Imho IN with a few warning passes , shots etc should keep them from repeating such atrocities in the future .

Well how about some miggy 29 do some extreme manouever over Srilankan naval boats and show some teeths( antiship missiles)?? :coffee:

And if they still not behave ,how about a flypast over Colombo starring Jaguar IM ,Sea harriers,Mig 29K And Dhruvs..???

Man i think it surprise's you. .but the more surprise thing is the indian south zone coast guard know about this but they take no action because central govt give indirect permission to the lankans navy because it'll stop the support to the ltte by tamil fisher mans. . But it actually very wrong. . As it only affect the innocent tamil fishers :hitwall:

SLN had stoped Indian fisherman near SL IN IMBL and told them to leave without entering Sri Lankan navel zone.

It's near IMBL, New Delhi had requested us deal the issue softly. So this time we told them to leave, we did not arrest them.

lankan navy leave coz they were in indian water , and i have no news that new delhi has told indian coastle gaurds to deal such voilations by lankan navy solfly...

even if the indian fishermen are within an inch of imb, the lankan navy has no business telling them to go anywhere....... We should send a couple of patrol ships over there with permission to fire on any lankan navy ship which enters indian waters
