Gas station clerk surprises robbers in the best way possible

Most people secretly fantasize about being held up by a group of robbers, only to turn the tables on them by whipping out our fists of fury, besting them with our impressive Krav Maga moves. But Mayura Dissanayake actually did this.

Dissanayake, a convenience store clerk in Houston, Texas, and five-time MMA champion in his native Sri Lanka, got to put his training to use when a group of armed robbers attempted to hold up his store earlier this month. Houston’s KPRC 2 has the story, as well as the surveillance footage from the incident:

According to KPRC, Dissanayake was behind the counter July 10 at a Fuel Depot in South Wayside, when he saw his co-worker pulling into the parking lot after returning from the bank. The co-worker had apparently been followed by a group of men in an SUV, who emerged from the car and started beating him up.

A five-time MMA champion who’s been training for more than a decade, Dissanayake immediately sprung to action, running out to the parking lot to defend his co-worker. “The first guy I saw, I just kicked him in the face,” Dissanayake told KPRC. “Then I punched the other guy.”

The assailants immediately retreated, leaving one of the accomplices, 33-year-old Odell Mathis, behind on the ground. Fearing he was armed with a knife or gun, Dissanayake put Mathis into submission, just as he does in the ring, until police arrived to arrest him.

The moral of this story? Armed robbery doesn’t pay, people. Especially if the guy you’re trying to armed rob is as jacked as Mayura Dissanayake. Look at this dude. The lady will have two tickets to the gun show, please.

@Lankan Ranger I think you and the other Sri Lankan brothers here (tag em) will appreciate this one!

God damn!!!!

And yet I'm always hearing about Tamils attacking Sinhalese in UK and Canada LOL

Sinhalese are tall and strong, i doubt Tamil can take on them 1-1. Most be gang of 10 tamils vs 1 Sinhalese.

That video has infact gone viral.. NBC to CNN doing the story.. Good for him.. Hopefully he will get a chance to achieve his dream to fight in the UFC.. Thats the reason he had moved to the US

What? No I remember seeing on the news that a Sri Lankan in London was beaten up by Tamil teenagers and I heard similar from Canada. But fairplay on this one.

Two Sri Lankan students who overpowered a gunman during a McDonalds robbery are among dozens of courageous Victorians to be recognised with bravery awards.

He disarmed and disabled a gunman trying to rob a McDonalds store, but what scared Kasun Fernando more, was telling his parents back home in Sri Lanka that he had risked his life in doing so.

"At first mum was a bit scared, but she's really proud now," he told 7News reporter Brendan Roberts.

His fellow suburban crime fighter, Ishan Chathuranga, avoided telling his parents, fearful of the worry it would cause them.

In 2012, the pair was waiting at a McDonalds outlet in Mulgrave when a masked man, carrying a sawn-off shot gun stormed the fast food restaurant and tried to rob it.

"When I saw the gun was away from him and he was busy collecting the money, I thought I can take him on, so I jumped on him and put him down," Kasun said.

The pair then held the gunman until police arrived ten minutes later.

Nearly 300 Victorians were honoured in this year's national bravery awards, announced by the Governor General.

They will be presented with their awards at a ceremony next year.

The late airship pilot Michael Nerandzic received the highest accolade, the Star of Courage, for sacrificing his own life to save three passengers when his blimp burst into flames over Germany three years ago.

The paramedics who spent two weeks talking to miners, Brant Webb and Todd Russell, while they were trapped underground at Beaconsfield have also been honoured.

"We were there 24 hours a day. When they wanted to sleep, they slept, when they wanted to talk, we were there for them."

Fifteen members of the Marysville CFA have also been commended for their bravery on Black Saturday. (Yahoo News)
