In what seems like a major development, Sri Lanka has expressed its commitment to raise India’s human rights violations in the occupied Kashmir at the UN. Although the Sri Lankan government stated that this was a tit for tat because New Delhi had voted in favour of a US sponsored resolution against the country for its crackdown on Tamil insurgents, it would still help boost the Kashmiri intifada.

It is definitely through such international condemnation that New Delhi can be ultimately pressurised into giving up the occupation. That Sri Lanka has taken a stand means a lot, especially when not many countries are willing to talk about a territory that New Delhi has come to assume as its integral part. The atrocities that the Indian forces have been committing normally are ignored by the Western media. Even the recent discovery of mass graves in the valley that contained thousands of mutilated bodies of innocent Kashmiris did not get the coverage that it deserved. What is, however, shameful is that our own government has also been downplaying the conflict. Consider, for instance, the reluctance to even discuss it straightforwardly with the Indians. This has happened repeatedly during the talks and bilateral meetings with Indian government officials. Unfortunately, in various meetings the government simply kept towing the Indian line that terrorism should be regarded as the core issue. There is little doubt that this guilty silence is also meant to curry favour with the US that appears totally against respecting the will of the Kashmiris owing to its strategic partnership with New Delhi. Also these days, Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir and JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been vociferously defending the rights of Kashmiris. In fact, in each one of his public addresses, he vents his spleen at the government for sitting idle. While his enthusiasm is welcome, one cannot help but wonder what he was himself doing when he was very much a part of the coalition government. It is a sad reflection on his state of commitment to the Kashmiri cause that one did not hear him speak with as much fervour back then. Now that he is out of power and needs something to derive political mileage explains why he is so eagerly whipping up pro-Kashmir sentiment.

It should, however, come as a shock for New Delhi to hear that the Sri Lankans have made up their mind to expose the atrocities in the held Valley. This is apart from their worry that China alongside has also reiterated that it considers the Valley as a disputed territory. Under circumstances of the sort, the reality that it cannot endlessly maintain its stranglehold over Kashmir should dawn on New Delhi. The peaceful way out is to let the UN hold a free and fair plebiscite.

.
they are free to do so ...

Op can u post any lankan sources ...?

.
Report from Srilankan media will be more trust worthy :lol: ( Kashmir related news from a Pakistani source )

But can this change any thing that any tom dick or harry country decide to oppose India in UN for kashmir ???? :rofl:

.
LINK?

And does Pakistan want a plebiscite as per UN resolutions OR according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people? One can't have the cake and eat it too, what? UN Resolutions says nothing about the 'wishes of the Kashmiri people'.

Secondly, if anyone has read the preamble of the relevant UN resolution, it starts with the paragraph clearly stating that Pakistan must withdraw ALL its troops, tribals and citizens from areas taken over by Pakistani forces in Kashmir BEFORE a plebiscite can be held.

India is still waiting!

. . .
This is the same news paper whose editor-in-chief called for nuclear attack on India..

Forget about this paper's credibility, anybody posting this paper as a source has lost all credibility

Hmmmm....we should raise the issue of human rights violations in balochistan and the part of kashmir occupied by pakistan :azn:

.
What a waste of time....Let me world raise any issue about Kashmir...but do you think any thing will change from Indian side???...Pakistani friends are really out of reality in PDF...

. . . .
Kashmir was never yours, dear. :azn:

we have the instrument of accession dear. your country might have forgotten that.
besides- i highly doubt anyone want to mess with India about Kashmir - in which we have the strong stand.
all these UN resolutions or human right issues don't change the reality. i am all for plebiscite- but then pakistan and china have to withdraw from its occupied territory of Kashmir to be able to do that.
the plebiscite will be done under india's observation - that's the only chance and option you people have.
therefore- even if lanka go on with this bold step (which i highly doubt) - nothing's gonna change.

Hmmmm....we should raise the issue of human rights violations in balochistan and the part of kashmir occupied by pakistan :azn:
its off topic but again- even if those issues are raised- nothing's gonna change. baluchistan is not going to be separated from pakistan just because somebody in UN thinks that the human right violation has taken place.
besides- i am waiting for the official statement from SL government about this whole issue.

Sri-Lankan govt should stop being aggressive against India. They won a war against LTTE doesn't mean they are world champion. Stop repeating the historical mistakes.

Have you read the resolution 48 ??? read it.

Preconditions:

The Government of Pakistan should undertake to use its best endeavors:
To secure the withdrawal from the State of Jammu and Kashmir of tribesmen and Pakistani nationals not normally resident therein who have entered the State for the purposes of fighting, and to prevent any intrusion into the State of such elements and any furnishing of material aid to those fighting in the State;
To make known to all concerned that the measures indicated in this and the following paragraphs provide full freedom to all subjects of the State, regardless of creed, caste, or party, to express their views and to vote on the question of the accession of the State, and that therefore they should co-operate in the maintenance of peace and order.
The Government of India should:
When it is established to the satisfaction of the Commission set up in accordance with the Council's Resolution 39 (1948) that the tribesmen are withdrawing and that arrangements for the cessation of the fighting have become effective, put into operation in consultation with the Commission a plan for withdrawing their own forces from Jammu and Kashmir and reducing them progressively to the minimum strength required for the support of the civil power in the maintenance of law and order;
Make known that the withdrawal is taking place in stages and announce the completion of each stage;
When the Indian forces shall have been reduced to the minimum strength mentioned in (a) above, arrange in consultation with the Commission for the stationing of the remaining forces to be carried out in accordance with the following principles:
That the presence of troops should not afford any intimidation or appearance of intimidation to the inhabitants of the State;
That as small a number as possible should be retained in forward areas;
That any reserve of troops which may be included in the total strength should be located within their present base area.
The Government of India should agree that until such time as the plebiscite administration referred to below finds it necessary to exercise the powers of direction and supervision over the State forces and policy provided for in paragraph 8, they will be held in areas to be agreed upon with the Plebiscite Administrator.
After the plan referred to in paragraph 2(a) above has been put into operation, personnel recruited locally in each district should so far as possible be utilized for the reestablishment and maintenance of law and order with due regard to protection of minorities, subject to such additional requirements as may be specified by the Plebiscite Administration referred to in paragraph 7.
If these local forces should be found to be inadequate, the Commission, subject to the agreement of both the Government of India and the Government of Pakistan, should arrange for the use of such forces of either Dominion as it deems effective for the purpose of pacification.
